Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.
The Reds and Cubs meet at Wrigley Field with Chicago at 24-12, first in the NL Central, 16-5 at home, riding a seven-game winning streak and a 13-game Wrigley winning streak. Cincinnati is still a dangerous divisional piece at 20-16 and 10-8 away, but the Reds have dropped five straight, and the first two games of this series have tilted through late-game pressure. Chicago won 5-4 Monday on Michael Conforto’s walk-off homer after Seiya Suzuki’s three-run shot, then won 3-2 Tuesday in 10 innings after Michael Busch hit the tying homer in the eighth and the walk-off single in the 10th. Wrigley is cool, around 52°F with light northwest wind on the game page, so the scoring case has to come from matchup quality, contact, command, bullpen stress and Chicago’s current leverage form rather than summer carry. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Brady Singer is the central pressure point. He enters 2-2 with a 5.57 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, 47 hits, nine walks, 20 strikeouts and seven HR allowed in 32.1 innings, and his advanced profile is louder than the surface: 92.1 mph average exit velocity allowed, 45.9% hard-hit rate, .409 wOBA, .382 xwOBA, .307 xBA, .526 xSLG, 10.2% barrel rate, 37.7% sweet-spot rate and only a 13.1% strikeout rate. The times-through-the-order split is the piece that pushes this to the full game. First time through, hitters are at .298/.349/.474 with a .361 wOBA; second time through, that jumps to .397/.435/.655 with a .473 wOBA, 23 hits, 11 runs, 11 earned runs and four walks in 11.2 innings. His road split is just as useful for Chicago: 7.41 ERA, 28 hits, 15 runs, 14 earned runs, three HR and a .368/.417/.605 opponent line in 17.0 innings.
Colin Rea gives the Cubs a steadier base, even with contact risk in the profile. He is 4-1 with a 4.41 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 30 strikeouts in 32.2 innings, and Chicago has won the only two Rea starts where it was favored on the moneyline. His expected-contact sheet has enough danger to respect Cincinnati, with 92.9 mph average exit velocity allowed, 50.0% hard-hit rate, .304 wOBA, .331 xwOBA and an 8.8% barrel rate, but he has been the more functional arm in this matchup, and the Cubs’ broader staff profile is cleaner: 3.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a .227 opponent batting average, all comfortably ahead of Cincinnati’s staff marks. Singer’s combination of baserunners, weak strikeout cover, road damage and second-time-through leakage creates the clearer separation lane.
Chicago’s lineup fits the Singer attack point because it owns both a better right-handed-pitching split and multiple current-form bats. The Cubs are hitting .250/.342/.420 with a .762 OPS against righties, ranking second in MLB OPS in that split, with 208 hits, 38 doubles, four triples, 32 HR, 115 RBI, 111 walks, 10 HBP and 189 strikeouts across 965 plate appearances. Suzuki is the cleanest present-tense damage bat: over his last nine games, he has 11 hits, one double, three HR, six RBI, six runs, four walks and a .324/.385/.618/1.002 slash, backed by 90.1 mph average exit velocity, 44.4% hard-hit rate, .409 wOBA, .386 xwOBA, 9.5% barrel rate and 72.9 mph bat speed. Busch has become the pressure bat of the homestand after Sunday’s four-RBI game, Tuesday’s tying homer and Tuesday’s walk-off single. Pete Crow-Armstrong adds two HR, six RBI, four walks and two steals over his last 10, while Alex Bregman’s RBI single Tuesday, Conforto’s walk-off Monday, Nico Hoerner’s contact layer, and Dansby Swanson’s extra-innings run give the order enough ways to build a margin.
Elly De La Cruz has been the Reds’ best current-form engine, with 12 hits, two HR, seven RBI, six runs, seven walks, 11 strikeouts, two steals and a .343/.452/.543/.995 line over his last 10, plus elite batted-ball traits at 94.3 mph average exit velocity, 51.6% hard-hit rate, .398 wOBA, .375 xwOBA and 15.6% barrel rate. Nathaniel Lowe has given Cincinnati the recent thump with 10 hits, two doubles, four HR, eight RBI, five runs, four walks and a .706 SLG over his last 10, and Spencer Steer adds 10 hits, one HR, five RBI and a .405 OBP in that same window. The full-team shape is thinner than the star layer. The Reds are hitting .223/.305/.385 with a .690 OPS against right-handed pitching, with 209 hits, 45 doubles, two triples, 34 HR, 109 RBI, 105 walks, eight HBP and 258 strikeouts across 1,058 plate appearances. That is enough power to threaten Rea, with too much strikeout drag to erase Chicago’s broader matchup edge.
The bullpen and market layers finish the argument for the run line. Cincinnati’s late structure took a direct hit Tuesday when Emilio Pagán grabbed his hamstring after one pitch in the ninth and was carted off; he is expected to miss extended time, and the Reds already had a shaky relief profile with relievers ranking last in xERA at 5.36, last in BB/9 at 6.22, and sitting with a 5.18 FIP. Chicago, meanwhile, just got 3.1 scoreless innings Tuesday from Javier Assad, Jacob Webb, Daniel Palencia and Ryan Rolison, with Rolison working a clean 10th. Cubs ML -175 and Cubs F5 -175 are heavy prices for the obvious team-quality edge, while Cubs team total over 4.5 +100 is live but still exposed to cool Wrigley turning one loud swing into a long out. Cubs -1.5 +123 captures the fuller script: Singer’s road and second-time-through collapse risk, Chicago’s superior OBP/power split against righties, the Reds’ bullpen disruption, and a home team winning late with multiple lineup lanes.
Best bet: Cubs -1.5 +123. The ticket fails if Elly and Lowe get to Rea early, Singer survives the second turn with ground balls, and Chicago lands in a third straight one-run game. The stronger full-game read points toward the Cubs creating one extra inning of separation against Singer or the damaged Cincinnati bullpen.
Projected score: Cubs 6, Reds 3.
