Meghan Townsley previews Wednesday’s WNBA matchup between the Seattle Storm and Toronto Tempo and provides her best pick.
The 2026 WNBA season rolls on Wednesday with a full four-game slate. The 1-1 Seattle Storm head to Toronto to take on the league’s newest franchise, the Tempo, as both teams work through early-season growing pains. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, with Toronto listed as 3.5-point favorites and the total sitting at 167.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Let’s get into it!
After a complete overhaul of their roster in the offseason, the Storm and new head coach Sonia Raman are experimenting with a new-look group, which could take some time to build synergy. Rookie Flau’jae Johnson has started her WNBA career in stable fashion, dropping 28 points through her first two games; however, her 27% shooting from the field is hopefully a floor that rises with more reps.
Second-year Dominique Malonga opened her season hot with 21 points in Game 1 before regressing to just six in Game 2 due to early foul trouble. Defensively, though, Malonga is thriving early with a combined five blocks and two steals, and it’s clear she’ll be an important frontcourt piece moving forward.
Jade Melbourne, the 5’10” guard who returned to Seattle this offseason after a stint with the Mystics, has been steady to start, putting up 13 and 15 points while hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. While it’s still too early to define this team’s ceiling, early signs point toward a slower rebuild centered around young talent like Johnson, Melbourne, and Awa Fam once she joins the team following her season overseas in Spain.
On the other side is another team in test-and-learn mode: the Toronto Tempo. The franchise’s inaugural game was underwhelming, with both teams combining for just 133 points while Toronto shot an egregious 27% from the field. Veteran Marina Mabrey led the way with 27 points and seven rebounds, showing she’ll be a key offensive engine — not just as a scorer, but as a facilitator who can control (seriously, no pun intended) the tempo. Brittney Sykes, another expansion addition, chipped in 14 points and three steals in Game 1, flashing her two-way ability and defensive presence. Both Sykes and Mabrey will be critical veterans in getting this team off the ground.
Both offenses are a bit questionable right now, with the Storm still working through a new roster and the Tempo having just one game under their belt as a new franchise. This has the feel of a close contest, but it’s hard to see it turning into a high-paced, high-scoring game.
