How Much Money Did Mortal Kombat II Make at the Box Offic...
Sam Connon · 2026-05-10 · via DraftKings Network

Five years after one of the most popular video game franchises earned a fresh movie adaptation, Mortal Kombat II has arrived in theaters. So how much money did the long-delayed sequel make at the box office over its three-day opening weekend?

Seven months after its initially-scheduled release date, Mortal Kombat II is finally out in theaters. Warner Bros. released the film nationwide on May 8, coming in the wake of Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2 taking the box office by storm. Did Mortal Kombat II, featuring the addition of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, keep Hollywood’s hot streak going?

Here is a breakdown of how Mortal Kombat II performed at the box office this past weekend:

Mortal Kombat II Box Office

Mortal Kombat II made an estimated $38.7 million at the box office between May 8 and May 10. That is a pretty substantial improvement from Mortal Kombat, which made $23.3 million in its opening weekend en route to a $42.3 million domestic gross in the spring of 2021. That was right when theaters were re-opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic, though, plus Warner Bros. dropped the film on HBO Max the same day it premiered. The original Mortal Kombat film also opened to $23.3 million and legged out to $70.4 million domestic back in 1995. Adjusted for inflation, that is equivalent to a $50.5 million opening and $152.8 million domestic gross in today’s dollars. Its 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, made $16.8 million opening weekend and $35.9 million domestically on the whole – $34.6 million and $73.9 million adjusted for inflation, respectively.

According to Deadline and Variety, Mortal Kombat II made $5.2 million in Thursday night previews on May 7. That cash is counted as part of the film’s $17.0 million Friday gross. Mortal Kombat II now owns the No. 7 domestic opening weekend of 2026 so far, trailing only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scream 7 and Hoppers. It also boasts the No. 12 domestic opening weekend for a video game movie at the box office, coming in behind both Super Mario movies, both Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, all three Sonic the Hedgehog movies, The Minecraft Movie, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Uncharted.

Looking beyond the United States and Canada, Mortal Kombat II reeled in an additional $23.0 million overseas. In total, the film grossed $63.0 million worldwide over its opening weekend. The first film grossed $84.4 million globally during its initial theatrical release five years ago, while the original made $122.2 million and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation made $51.4 million.
