Supergirl, the second cinematic entry in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, has finally landed in theaters. So how much money did the Milly Alcock superhero movie make at the box office over its opening weekend?
There has been no shortage of massive franchise blockbusters in the first half of 2026, from Michael and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu to Masters of the Universe and Disclosure Day. Now, for the second summer in a row, audiences are getting an installment in James Gunn’s DC Universe. Supergirl hit theaters nationwide on June 26, opening alongside Jackass: Best and Last. So how did the superhero film perform against Toy Story 5‘s second weekend?
Here is a breakdown of how Supergirl performed at the box office this past weekend:
Supergirl made an estimated $38.0 million at the box office between June 26 and June 28. For comparison, Superman opened to $125.0 million when it kicked off the new DC Universe in July 2025. The first attempt at a Supergirl solo movie came back in November 1984, when it scored a $5.7 million opening weekend – $19.3 million, adjusted for inflation. A version of Kara Zor-El also appeared in 2023’s The Flash, which opened to $55.0 million.
Looking at other superheroine movies, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever still owns the opening weekend record at $181.3 million, followed by Captain Marvel at $153.4 million, Wonder Woman at $103.3 million, Black Widow at $80.4 million and The Marvels‘ $46.1 million start. Supergirl beat out Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn‘s $33.0 million start, as well as Catwoman‘s $16.7 million mark, Wonder Woman 1984’s $16.7 million COVID-era debut, Madame Web‘s $15.3 million launch and Elektra‘s $12.8 million pull.
According to Deadline and Variety, Supergirl made $7.8 million in Thursday night previews. That cash is technically counted as part of the film’s $18.0 million Friday gross. Supergirl is on track for the No. 13 domestic opening weekend of 2026 so far, trailing Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Backrooms, Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scream 7, Scary Movie, Hoppers, Disclosure Day and Mortal Kombat II.
Going beyond the United States and Canada, Supergirl has reeled in an additional $30.0 million overseas. In total, the film grossed $68.0 million worldwide over its opening weekend. Superman made $220.0 million globally over its opening weekend 11 months ago, for context, en route to a $618.7 million final gross. Supergirl is already the seventh-highest grossing woman-led superhero film at the global box office. Captain Marvel, once again, owns the top spot at $1.13 billion, while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Wonder Woman, The Marvels, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, Madame Web and Catwoman round out the top 10.
