Juan Soto juuust missed out on his third home run in as many games on Saturday, settling for a double to cap a valiant 2-for-4 performance in New York’s loss to the Braves. 

The superstar outfielder, 27, is hitting .287 with a .937 OPS and 15 homers with the Mets this season — a glimmering silver lining amid the team’s tailspin. One of the most gifted sluggers of his generation, he sits in MLB’s top one percent in xwOBA (.420), xSLG (.624), and squared-up percentage (39.1%). 

Soto is primed for another strong showing in Sunday’s rubber match, facing Atlanta’s Bryce Elder. While the All-Star right-hander has impressed with a 2.66 ERA (3.02 xERA) and a 1.05 WHIP this season, he’s struggled in past meetings with the former World Series champ. Soto is 3-for-7 (.429) with a home run in his career against Elder.

The righty slugger, 31, should stay hot in Sunday’s rubber match against the Padres, facing struggling right-hander Walker Buehler. The two-time World Series champ’s decent 4.33 ERA is underscored by a 4.78 xERA, a .280 xBA, and a boatload of loud contact. Alonso is primed to capitalize, having gone 5-for-17 (.294) with four home runs and eight RBIs in past meetings with Buehler.

2026 has so far been a season to forget for Miles Mikolas. The veteran right-hander, 37, has gotten crushed to the tune of a 5.90 ERA (5.01 xERA) and a 1.34 WHIP in 14 appearances (six starts) this season, while struggling to generate swings and misses. Mikolas ranks in MLB’s bottom four percent with a paltry 14.5% strikeout rate across 61 innings. 

While his strikeout line may feel almost too low, Mikolas has finished with fewer than 2.5 strikeouts in five starts this season — including back-to-back outings heading into Sunday. Compounding the issue, the Mariners have posted the third-lowest strikeout rate in baseball (19.7%) since the beginning of June.
