The Athletics are in a great position against Jameson Taillon after his rough month of May; Yordan Alvarez gets a power-friendly matchup against Bubba Chandler, and Eric Lauer faces a difficult test against one of the best lineups in baseball against left-handed pitching. I was surprised that this total was only 3.5, as I was expecting 4.5. Jameson Taillon is coming off a horrific month of May, in which he ended with a 6.66 ERA, a .403 wOBA, 10 of the 19 home runs he allowed, and a 7.52 FIP. Now Taillon faces a very strong lineup, especially against the four-seam. Taillon is throwing that pitch 34% of the time, and the Athletics dismantle it. Tonight’s expected lineup has a combined .400 wOBA with a .266 ISO. After a month like that, it’s hard to trust Taillon right now, at least until he shows that he’s getting back on track. Winds will be blowing in tonight, which is a negative, but Taillon has been bad across the board, both at home and on the road. I’m comfortable taking the Athletics to score at least four runs in this game.
Alvarez has a fantastic matchup tonight against Bubba Chandler and the Pirates. Against lefties, Chandler has a .349 wOBA with a 5.71 FIP and a 1.6 HR/9. This puts Alvarez in a solid spot at home. Against righties in Houston, Alvarez has a .440 wOBA with a .286 ISO and a 184 wRC+. Alvarez is also very strong against the four-seam fastball, which Chandler relies upon heavily. Throwing it 46% of the time, Alvarez has posted a .533 wOBA and a .449 ISO against that pitch from a lefty.

Lauer is set to face the Diamondbacks for the second time this season, except this time, in a Dodgers uniform. In that prior start, Lauer allowed three runs on five hits through five innings of work in Arizona, which is where tonight’s matchup is. The D-Backs are a very strong-hitting ballclub against lefties, and tonight’s expected lineup has combined for a .369 wOBA with a .205 ISO and a massive 15% BB%. Let’s not forget, the Blue Jays outright released Lauer earlier this season because of his struggles. Lauer has allowed at least three earned runs in five of his eight appearances this season, including one out of the bullpen.
