Blake Krass gives his prediction and pick for the quarter-final match between Flavio Cobolli and Alexander Zverev at the 2026 Madrid Open.
The 2026 Madrid Open quarter-finals conclude on Thursday for the ATP. There is a highly anticipated match between World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and World No. 13 Flavio Cobolli.
Alexander Zverev is -293 to win the match, while Flavio Cobolli is listed at +231 on DraftKings Sportsbook to pull off the upset.
Alexander Zverev has moved up to the No. 3 spot in the world ranking since Novak Djokovic has been out with an injury. Zverev now has a real shot at claiming a Masters 1000 title with both Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz out of the field. The World No. 1, Jannik Sinner, still stands in his path, but Zverev needs to prove himself during this stretch with a weaker field.
Zverev is a two-time winner here at the Madrid Open. He won this event in both 2018 and 2021. Zverev has seven career ATP Masters 1000 titles, and four of them have come on clay. Clay is Sinner’s weakest surface, making the next couple of events massive chances for Zverev to add to his career legacy. However, before he can worry about Sinner, he has a tough quarter-final meeting with Flavio Cobolli.
Flavio Cobolli was the No. 39 player in the world at this time last year and is now a top-15 player. Cobolli just pulled off a great win over Daniil Medvedev to advance to this round and is now looking for one of the biggest wins of his young career. Cobolli is just 23 years old and still trying to prove that he can get to the level of the top players in the world.
This is the venue for Cobolli to do it, as he has proven to be a bit of a clay specialist. Cobolli is just 3-17 against top-10 players, but all three of those wins have come on clay. Both of Cobolli’s Challenger Tour titles came on clay, and two of his three ATP titles have come on clay. This is the surface Cobolli wants to be on when pursuing a big upset over a top-ranked player.
My best bet for this match is for Flavio Cobolli and Alexander Zverev to go to a third set. The betting line on over 2.5 sets can be found at plus money on DraftKings Sportsbook, but I expect this to be a tight, exciting match. These two have faced off three times before. Zverev won the first two, but Cobolli won the most recent match earlier this year. That match came on clay in Munich. Cobolli proved in that match that he is more than capable of challenging Zverev on this surface.
Ultimately, I would back Zverev to get it done in the third set and move on to the semi-finals. However, this should be a closely contested match that gets pushed to three sets.
