Monday’s slate features a full schedule of games, highlighted by Dylan Cease’s elite strikeout upside, Max Fried looking to build off his last start against the Red Sox, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto facing the Marlins.
Matz is coming off his worst outing of the season, throwing just three innings against the Reds, allowing four runs on four hits, three of which were home runs, and four walks. Messick is also coming off his worst outing, but still owns a 1.76 ERA with a 3.17 xERA and an 8.5 K/9.
Despite his bloated numbers, May has allowed exactly one earned run in three straight starts, spanning 17.1 innings against the Red Sox, Guardians, and Marlins. Montgomery will serve as the opener for the Pirates.
After tossing back-to-back shutouts, Suarez was hit hard by the Yankees for four runs on five hits in his last outing. Cease continues to post elite strikeout numbers with a 15.4 K/9 through 25.2 innings, and his current 17% swing-and-miss rate is the highest of his career.
Kochanowicz is due for a rough start soon, as his xERA is over two runs higher than his 3.10 ERA. Kay just got lit up by the Diamondbacks last week, allowing eight runs on eight hits through 3.2 innings.
Castillo has been better as of late, allowing a combined six runs (three earned) on 12 hits over his last 10.1 innings. Nonetheless, his ERA and xERA are both over 5. Prielipp will make his second major league start after allowing two runs on four hits through four innings against the Mets.
After a few rough outings, Fried bounced back against the Red Sox, tossing eight shutout innings with nine strikeouts. Lefties continue to give Leiter trouble, as they’ve tagged him for a .415 wOBA and a 5.27 FIP.
In his first outing off the IL, Boyd allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts against the Phillies through 4.2 innings. Vasquez is a prime regression candidate, as his 1.88 ERA is nowhere near his 4.32 xERA.
Paddack has been saddled with the loss in all four starts he’s made thus far. Yamamoto has recorded at least six strikeouts in four of his five starts this season, continuing his strong early form.
