The Brewers have a great matchup lined up tonight against Kyle Leahy. He’s been as bad as advertised, with his 5.52 ERA and xERA of 6.01 closely aligned. Lefties have been the biggest issue, and it’s been eye-opening. They’ve tagged him for a .473 wOBA with a 6.47 FIP and four of the six home runs he’s allowed. This sets the Brewers up well for success, as they can go extremely left-handed heavy. It’s very possible that tonight’s lineup could feature seven or eight lefties, with the likely exception being Luis Rengifo. Leahy is giving up a lot of hard contact as well, with a 50% hard-hit rate this season.
This is an alternate line for Bellinger tonight, as he’s set to face Shane Baz and the Baltimore Orioles. I really like this matchup for him against Baz, who currently owns a .418 wOBA with a 4.10 FIP against lefties this season. Not only has Bellinger been hitting for a lot of power, but he’s also third on the team in RBI and runs scored, trailing only Aaron Judge and Ben Rice.
Both of Baz’s main pitches have been getting hit hard, as his four-seam and knuckle curve aren’t fooling opposing hitters. They’ve tagged the four-seam for a .414 wOBA and the curve for a .373 wOBA with a 49% hard-hit rate. His cutter, which he’s only thrown 21% of the time, has been his best pitch. However, Bellinger handles that pitch well, with a .432 wOBA and a .327 ISO against it since last season. With the Yankees projected for over five runs tonight, I like taking this alternate line for Bellinger at +149.
This outs total feels a bit inflated, especially when you consider that Gilbert has not been going deep into games. He’s gone under 17.5 outs recorded in five of his seven starts, including his last three. Now he’ll face the highest scoring offense in the league in the Braves, who have 20 more runs scored than any other team in baseball. Gilbert’s four-seam fastball has been his weakest pitch, and it’s also his primary pitch. Opposing hitters have tagged it for a massive .548 wOBA and a 56% hard-hit rate. This is significant because the Braves have demolished that pitch this season. Tonight’s expected lineup has a .453 wOBA with a .313 ISO against it. Getting +123 on a play that has hit in five of seven starts feels like the move.
