Following another great episode that sent home Benjamin “Coach” Wade and Chrissy Hofbeck, Survivor 50 returned Wednesday night with the ninth installment of the show’s most anticipated season yet. Including spoilers for who was voted out, let’s recap Survivor 50 Episode 9: I Deserve All of This.
The fallout from Devens’ “idol” discovery at Tribal was still being felt at the beginning of Episode 9. And not everyone was a fan. Rick thinks he saved himself with the show, but Jonathan thinks it painted a target on Devens’ back. Meanwhile, Ozzy and Rizzo think it was a dumb move and a blessing in disguise because it takes the heat of their idols and Cirie loves it because anyone else having being a target works for her. Devens also managed to anger his ally Emily, who he told the idol is fake, because it puts their alliance at risk. Even his buddy Christian is looking to do damage control, going so far as to offer up his Shot in the Dark to Jonathan, which immediately puts his game in grave danger. No matter what, Devens put a HUGE blaring target on his (and his allies’) back by playing games.
Christian decides maybe it makes sense to target Ozzy, who he thinks is playing the middle and has an idol. His mistake though it to run it by Cirie, who stays true to Ozzy and tells him about Christian coming for him. He’s dead to Ozzy now and Jonathan is licking his chops to potentially send Christian home too.
For this week’s immunity challenge, the players have to play Wrist Assured, where the players hold on to a handle with a rope wrapped around it in order to keep up a bucket filled with 25% of their pre-game body weight. In addition to individual immunity, rice is also up for grabs. But instead of five players sitting out the challenge for a chance to earn enough rice for the rest of the season, Jeff has his own twist since he’s a fan too, after all. He needs four (negotiated down from five) players to make a side bet — they have to bet they can outlast JEFF, who is also running this challenge (thanks Jimmy Fallon)! If all four outlast Jeff, they get the rice. However, he only needs to beat one of them and he gets to keep the rice.
Ultimately, the following players took the bet:
Jeff lasted seven and half minutes, but he couldn’t outlast any of the four challengers in the side bet, so the rice has been earned. Along with Jeff’s respect after he saw just what the contestants have been going through all these years. In the end, Joe earned redemption for Season 48 along with immunity, outlasting everyone before denying Ozzy the chance at tying Boston Rob with nine individual immunity wins. That wasn’t all, as Joe was then tasked with sending another player on a journey. After a rock-paper-scissors tournament, Christian was the player sent on the journey, much to the dismay of Ozzy.
Christian is sent off to a barge, and it’s imperative that he’s successful because Jonathan is marshalling votes him home back at camp. Jimmy Fallon is in charge of the challenge — if Christian can put together the puzzle before all the anchors fall and the puzzle gets dragged into the water, he’ll get to put a vote in the urn before Tribal even begins. But if he fails, he gets an envelope he has to read back at camp in front of everyone.
Unfortunately for Christian, the puzzle went overboard and he feels like he let himself down. But he wants to let his newborn son know that you’re not defined by the moments where you fall short, but by what you do afterward. So he has to pick himself up and move forward. And that includes opening the envelope and revealing what it says it in front of everyone — he’s going to be the first person in Survivor history to vote against himself! Ozzy and Cirie are licking their chops. But a wrinkle develops — in trying to save her allies Christian and Devens, Emily puts a target on her own back by suggesting taking a shot at Ozzy, which gets Tiff and Cirie looking hard at her, even though Rizzo is locked in on Christian. Cirie sums it up best at Tribal — do you take the low-hanging fruit or do you play Survivor.
