Bryan Armetta shares his three favorite MLB NRFI prop bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for Saturday’s 15-game slate.
15 games between 30 teams are on tap this Saturday across Major League Baseball. For those looking to cash in quickly on a bet, nothing makes more sense than an NRFI. With that being said, there’s more to this one than meets the eye. Some pitchers thrive early, while others take more time to get settled in than others. Which NRFI picks are worth a closer look today?
Ahead of Saturday’s MLB contests, here are three NRFI bets worth placing on DraftKings Sportsbook.
We’ll kick things off with an AL East showdown this afternoon. For the Rays, it’s been a season full of unexpected surprises. That includes the standout pitching of Nick Martinez, a 35-year-old journeyman. That’s not to say the right-hander is a scrub, but he’s currently enjoying a career year. Through 42.0 innings of work, Martinez has posted a 1.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28 strikeouts. In addition, he hasn’t given up a first inning run over seven starts. In comparison, Boston owns baseball’s second-worst YRFI rate at home (11.1%).
Fortunately for the Red Sox, they have a quality arm of their own on the mound. 23-year-old Payton Tolle has excelled since returning to Boston. Over three appearances this season, he’s notched a 2.04 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 23 strikeouts. That includes terrific showings against quality Yankees and Tigers lineups. Tampa Bay, while dangerous on offense, hasn’t been the most consistent. The Rays have only scored 32 runs in their last ten games, seventh-lowest in baseball during that stretch. To boot, they own the league’s tenth-lowest OPS against left-handed pitching (.654). That bodes well for Tolle’s chances at a clean first inning in this one.
In this interleague matchup, it’ll be Edward Cabrera toeing the slab for Chicago. A prized acquisition this offseason, the former Marlins hurler has done well in the Windy City so far. Over seven appearances with the Cubs, the Dominican has notched a 3.27 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 37 strikeouts. Even more impressive, he has yet to surrender a first inning run. There’s a good chance that continues tonight against a lackluster Rangers lineup. Texas’ offense has accounted for a league-worst 6.25% YRFI rate at home.
On the other side, it’ll be Jack Leiter taking the hill. The former top prospect has been up and down throughout his three-year pro career. This season, he’s delivered a disappointing 5.45 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over seven starts. Still, he’s been more effective at pitcher-friendly Globe Life Field. When throwing in Arlington, Leiter has produced a stellar 80% NRFI rate. He’ll hope to improve that number against a red-hot Cubs lineup this evening. With that being said, Chicago has recorded the league’s third-worst YRFI rate on the road (12.50%).
A surprisingly good Pirates squad has remained competitive in large part because of pitching. Beyond ace Paul Skenes, the Buccos have gotten solid contributions from some of their ‘other’ arms. Braxton Ashcraft is among that group; the 26-year-old is responsible for a 3.02 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 45 strikeouts over 41.2 innings this season. Even more impressive, the second-year pro hasn’t allowed a first inning run in all 15 of his career starts. That’s bad news for an already light-hitting Giants lineup. San Francisco is averaging an MLB-worst 3.16 runs per game.
In this quality pitching matchup, it’ll be Landen Roupp in the top half of the inning. The Giants, if nothing else, know how to develop starting pitchers. The 27-year-old is no exception; his 3.18 ERA and 1.06 WHIP have been vital this season in The Bay. Much like Ashcraft, the right-hander has yet to allow a run in the first inning. The Pirates have been an above-average offense; whether that sustains itself over a full season remains to be seen. Regardless, Pittsburgh is averaging the fifth-fewest runs per game on the road (3.68).
