PITCHER

Stud

George Kirby, Seattle Mariners vs. Atlanta Braves, $9,000 — Kirby has not had a great start to the season, as the strikeout rate is only 19.1% while the K-BB% is 12.9%, both career-lows. Both the strikeout rate and K-BB% are below 20% for the first time in his career. The control has remained excellent, though, while limiting hard contact and keeping the ball in the yard have been a plus. I will side with the extensive history that this is just an aberration and Kirby will get back to career norms sooner than later. Kirby is at home, where he’s always pitched better and, while Atlanta is a tough offense, it is without Ronald Acuna Jr. setting the table. The ownership will likely be low for Kirby while the other options up top have question marks.

Value

Jameson Taillon, Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds, $7,600 Taillon has had a rough start to the season, as the FIP is 5.95 while he’s already allowed nine home runs in 34.2 innings. The barrel rate is 12.5% while the walk rate is a career-high 9.2%. AND the BABIP is only .207. That said, the strikeout rate is 22% while the average exit velocity is 87.3 mph. Despite all the volatility, he’s put up double-digit FPTS in five of six starts with a season-high of 23.4 FPTS in the most recent outing. Cincinnati is third in strikeouts, 24th in wOBA and 26th in wRC+.

INFIELD

Stud

Alec Burleson, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers, $4,500 — Burleson has five home runs in 147 plate appearances. The walk rate is 11.6% and the strikeout rate is only 13.6%. He’s slashing .279/.361/.465 with a .186 ISO. The average exit velocity is 91.2 mph while the barrel rate is 12.7%. The only blemish is the 7.7 degree launch angle. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 166 while the ISO is .227. Brandon Sproat has a 6.37 FIP and has allowed seven home runs in 26.2 innings, four of those to lefties. The FIP is 7.33 while the K-BB% is only 3.1% against lefties. The walk rate is 13%, launch angle is 18.2 degrees and the barrel rate is 10.7%.

Nolan Gorman, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers, $3,200 — Yup, we stacking against Sproat. Gorman also has five home runs, but the rest of the numbers aren’t as pretty as Burleson’s. That said, the launch angle is 19.4 degrees, pull rate is 47.5% and all five home runs have come off of right-handed pitching.

OUTFIELD

Stud

Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, $5,600 — Carroll has four home runs and four stolen bases in 129 plate appearances. The ISO is .245 while the slash is .273/.372/.518. That’s been buoyed by a .366 BABIP, though. The strikeout rate is 27.9% while the walk rate is 13.2%. The launch angle is only 8.0 degrees but the barrel rate is 12%. The bat speed is a robust 75 mph, though, good for the 85th percentile. The sprint speed of 29.4 feet per second is in the 97th percentile. Some of the numbers are good while others aren’t great. It’s only a matter of time before everything normalizes. And when they do, watch out. Case in point, Carroll only has a 97 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, but the BABIP is only .222. His career wRC+ against right-handed pitching is 134. Bubba Chandler throws hard, averaging 98 mph on the fastball, but the control is Ricky Vaughn-esque with a 15.4% walk rate. He’s allowed five home runs in 29 innings, four of those to lefties.

Tristan Peters, Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels, $2,500 — Peters has a .041 ISO on the season. The slash of .284/.346/.324 is mostly the result of a .389 BABIP. The barrel rate is only 3.6%. I usually shun this archetype of player, but he’s put up at least eight FPTS in five of the last six games with a high of 12 FPTS. The sprint speed of 28.6 feet per second is in the 91st percentile. He’s cheap, he’s hot and he’s got wheels. Hot Wheels anyone?
