Ryan Wohl breaks down the card and viewing information for this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
The WWE is in Kansas City, Missouri, at the T-Mobile Center for a stacked episode of Friday Night SmackDown! Two championship matches and two semifinal matches in the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments are featured on this week’s episode.
Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is set to defend his title against Gunther for the second straight time. But this time, Sami Zayn, who has been intertwined in this story, is the special guest referee for the match. Check out viewing information and the advertised superstars for WWE’s upcoming episode of Friday Night SmackDown below.
Friday Night SmackDown airs live on the USA Network in the United States beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Although their last match ended in controversy, Rhodes enters this contest 2-0 in one-on-one matches against Gunther. In the last 10 months, this championship has changed hands three times, with Rhodes winning it twice in that span. Rhodes’s first title reign lasted just 159 days, and he has currently held the title for 103 days. Having Rhodes lose the title to Gunther would make the American Nightmare feel less significant and dampen his run. If the Undisputed title changed hands twice on SmackDown in the last three months, it would make the championship not mean as much as it previously did.
Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther Prediction: Cody Rhodes retains the Undisputed Championship against Gunther.
Liv Morgan and Charlotte Flair are two of the best women’s wrestlers in WWE and should deliver an excellent match. Since Morgan already has gold, I think this is the perfect opportunity for Flair to continue her ascent back to the top of the women’s division.
Liv Morgan vs. Charlotte Flair Prediction: Charlotte Flair advances to the Queen of the Ring Final.
On Monday Night Raw, Oba Femi advanced to the King of the Ring final, and the winner of this contest will meet him at Night of Champions. Evans has had a great run since joining WWE’s main roster, but now he faces a tough challenge against former champion Jey Uso. Jey Uso enters this match with a plethora of experience, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu got involved.
Jey Uso vs. Je’Von Evans Prediction: Jey Uso defeats Je’Von Evans to advance in the King of the Ring tournament.
The tag team division in WWE has been lacking recently, as both titles on Raw and SmackDown are held by individuals rather than traditional teams. Damian Priest and R-Truth beat the MFTs for the titles in March and have since totaled four title defenses. Now, the MFTs have gained momentum once again and have been finding more success lately. I think having Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga win the titles would spark more excitement in the SmackDown tag team division.
Damian Priest & R-Truth vs. Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga Prediction: Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga win the WWE Tag Team Championship.
For the fourth time in the last month, Carmelo Hayes and Ricky Saints will face off in a singles match. They are 1-1 against each other, with one of the matches ending in a double count-out. Saints and Hayes have both been after Trick Williams for a United States title opportunity. I think Hayes needs the victory more in this contest, as he has more history with Williams. But it wouldn’t be surprising if someone interfered in this match.
Carmelo Hayes vs. Ricky Saints Prediction: Carmelo Hayes defeats Ricky Saints.
The event is taking place at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Friday Night SmackDown starts at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Fans in the U.S. can view this event live on USA Network.
