Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks ($8,500) — Eovaldi’s season has been an EKG’s delight this season, as the range from peak to trough has been Mariana Trench massive. He opened the season getting blasted for six and five earned runs in 4.2 and 4 innings, good for 9.7 and 0.4 FPTS. He then was vintage Eovaldi, putting up 22.7 and 30.2 FPTS before finishing with 7.9 and 3.3 FPTS in the next two starts. Well, in the two most recent outings, Eovaldi was magnificent, going for 30.3 and 33.6 FPTS. Shrug. If the SATs taught me anything, it’s that the next two starts will be sub-10 FPTS, but life has taught me to think outside the box! Eovaldi may not put up 30 FPTS again, but I like him to continue to pitch well in this one. Arizona has some power but the Diamondbacks are 23rd in wOBA and wRC+.
Roki Sasaki, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants ($7,200) — It’s crazy how bad Sasaki has been in MLB, especially since he was hyped up to be so, so, so good and dominated the NPB, which is a high-level league. But this is why they play the games because baseball players are not robots that spit out stats. They are humans with emotions and variables outside of beep, boop and bop. Sasaki is averaging 97.3 mph on the fastball and the strikeout rate has increased from 17.4% to 19.4% this season. The walk rate is still 11.2%, though, while the FIP is 6.83. The launch angle is 16.7 degrees and the barrel rate is 12.2%. In the most recent outing, Sasaki went six innings, walked two and struck out four while allowing three earned runs on five hits. Now he faces a Giants team that is dead-last in walk rate, 29th in ISO, 29th in wOBA and 30th in wRC+.
Ben Rice, New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles ($6,000) — Rice has 12 home runs, 30 runs, 27 RBI, two stolen bases and a .385 ISO. Seven of those home runs have come off of righties while the wRC+ is 200 and ISO is .366 against right-handed pitching. Brandon Young has a 4.82 FIP and 15.1% strikeout rate. The average exit velocity is 90.2 mph while the launch angle is 14.5 degrees. Against lefties, the K-BB% is 4.1% while the FIP is 5.21. The Orioles bullpen isn’t good, ranking 24th in HR/9 and 19th in FIP.
Ryan McMahon, New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles ($2,500) — Yup, we stacking against Baltimore pitching today. McMahon hasn’t been good with the Yankees, striking out 30.3% of the time while posting an ISO of .124. Against right-handed pitching, the ISO is .145 and the wRC+ is only 92, but he’s cheap and the lineup could turn over plenty in this one.
Cody Bellinger, New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles ($5,100) — YUP, stacking against Baltimore pitching. What could go wrong? Bellinger has been really good to start the season, slashing .289/.385/.507 with a .218 ISO. The walk rate is 14.2% while the strikeout rate is only 13%. The BABIP is .305, so the slash looks real. He has five home runs, 24 runs, 28 RBI and four stolen bases. Against right-handed pitching, the ISO is .184 while the wRC+ is 145.
Spencer Jones, New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles ($2,200) — In a first ever for MLB Targets by Son, a full stack is being recommended. Jones just got called up three games ago and has done what Jones usually does, which is strikeout. In six plate appearances, Jones has whiffed four times, walked once and has yet to collect a hit. He has huge power, though, and I think he sends one into the stands for his first MLB hit. He’s also almost priced at the minimum and, if the Yankees do indeed get busy in this one, it’s Yahtzee for Jones and this stack.
