Should You Watch Spider-Noir In Color Or Black And White?
Andy Silva · 2026-05-29 · via DraftKings Network

Prime Video’s new Spider-Noir series lets viewers choose between black-and-white and full-color presentations — but one version clearly stands above the other.

Spider-Noir has swung onto Prime Video as of May 27, with all eight episodes of the series available to stream. Notably, it features a gimmick that turns out to be much more than a novelty: every episode can be watched in Black and White AND “True Hue Full Color.”

So which format should you watch in? Check out my thoughts below.

What Is Spider-Noir?

As noted by my colleague Sam Connon in his series preview, Spider-Noir is an eight-episode series set in that universe’s version of 1930s New York and follows that universe’s version of Spider-Man. But the protagonist of the series is an older, more grizzled Ben Reilly, who was the heroic vigilante The Spider until personal tragedy struck and led him to hang up his webs.

Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly/The Spider, although it should be noted it is NOT the same character he played in the Spiderverse animated films. Familiar names like Cat Hardy, Flint Marko and Lonnie Lincoln pop up, but in different variants than Spider-Man fans might be used to.

According to Esquire, Cage’s Reilly is part Humphrey Bogart, part Bugs Bunny, while retaining Cage’s trademark mannerisms and spirit. He also told producer Phil Lord that he was playing the part like “a spider trying to cosplay as a human.” All of it combined for a somewhat wacky, take on what a super-hero movie might have looked like in the age of serials.

For the first time, viewers can choose how they experience the story. So which version should you watch: Black and White or “True Hue Full Color?”

Should you watch in Black And White Or “True Hue Full Color?”

To me this is a no-brainer — go for the Black and White. I watched the first episode in Black and White and the second episode immediately after in “True Hue Full Color” and it felt like the storytelling demanded the Black and White treatment.

Not only did it feel the show was shot with Black and White in mind (like the beautiful introduction to Cat Hardy on stage at the Alcove or how the cinematography features the use of smoke and puddles, like in the Spider’s electric fight with Dirk Leyden), but it almost feels like another character in the story. I didn’t feel fully immersed in the world of Spider-Noir unless I was watching in Black and White. The color version just felt off, almost artificial, and I found myself longing for the noir aesthetic of the Black and White version. Luckily, you’re able to switch between the versions on every episode.

You’ve got all of the power to switch, but none of the responsibility to stay wedded to your initial choice.

Spider-Noir FAQs

Where can I watch Spider-Noir?

All eight episodes of Spider-Noir are available to stream on Prime Video.

Is Spider-Noir connected to Spider-Man?

Yes, the character that Nicolas Cage plays in the show is a variation of Spider-Man. However, he is playing a version of Ben Reilly rather than the version of Peter Parker he voiced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so it is not a direct continuation of the animated movie or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Will there be another season of Spider-Noir?

Neither MGM+, where the series debuted on May 25, nor Prime Video have publicly greenlit a second season of Spider-Noir, but co-showrunner Oren Uziel said that he has ideas for future plotlines.
