The Knicks need to win Game 4 at home tonight. After a remarkable start, stealing both games on the road in San Antonio, they can’t give that home-court advantage back to the Spurs. Things seemed off in New York even before tip-off in Game 3. The New York crowd and players should be supremely focused and elevate their game here in Game 4. The Knicks had all of the answers for what the Spurs wanted to do down the stretch in Game 1, then carried that over into Game 2. However, in Game 3, it was the Spurs that responded by stretching out the Knicks defensively and packing the paint against the Knicks’ offense.
Mike Brown has not failed a test yet in this postseason, and his staff should have the answers to what the Spurs threw at them in Game 3. The Knicks should rotate better defensively and take away the open looks from beyond the arc. Offensively, New York should make more of an effort to cut to the basket and look for open midrange jumpers. The offense should also run more through Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been so effective this postseason in that role.
The officiating in this game cannot be ignored as a factor. The general consensus is that the Spurs got a favorable whistle in Game 2 at home. Then, in Game 3, the numbers show that they dominated in the free-throw category in the second half. Even if those were correct calls, it’s now a big part of the story of this series. Add on the fact that Victor Wembanyama was not given a retroactive flagrant foul for his cheap shot on Jalen Brunson, and the Madison Square Garden crowd will be at a breaking point with the referees. Whether it is fair or not, nobody would be surprised if the Knicks got the favorable home whistle that the Spurs got in Game 2 at home.
Ultimately, the Knicks have been the better team in the closing minutes of all three games. While it was too little too late in Game 3, they still almost pulled off an incredible comeback. The Knicks’ superior point guard play and experience have shone through in those moments. That should be the difference in this game as well, as the Knicks take care of business and bring a 3-1 lead with them to San Antonio.
A major issue for the Knicks in Game 3 was the ball spending too much time in Jalen Brunson’s hands. There are three different factors at play when it comes to Brunson taking the air out of the ball. At the end of the day, one of the things that makes Jalen Brunson great is that he wants the ball in his hands when a basket is needed. Another factor is that the Knicks just never got into an offensive rhythm. Brunson would often be at the top of the key waiting for someone to cut to the basket or get open, and it just wouldn’t happen. The final factor, and a big reason the Knicks didn’t find their flow offensively, is that the Spurs defended so well as a group. It is now time for the Knicks to adjust to what the Spurs did and shake up their offense.
This should be a game where Jalen Brunson is a playmaker. He can drive to the basket and make the defense, mainly Victor Wembanyama, collapse on him, then kick it out to open shooters. The Knicks should also be much more active offensively and have Brunson looking for active cutters like Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, who can then shoot the midrange jumper. Brunson has had at least five assists in each of his past two games, as well as in nine of his past 10 games. He should hit that number again tonight.
Dylan Harper has been fantastic in the NBA Finals. He has been the third or even fourth option in this San Antonio offense this postseason, but that has worked in his favor in the Finals. Jalen Brunson is guarding him at times, who is the Knicks’ weakest perimeter defender. Even if Josh Hart is checking Harper, that is a more advantageous matchup than the likes of OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges or Landry Shamet. The rookie has been fearless going to the basket or even taking his perimeter shot at times. He had an awful shooting night in Game 3, going 1-for-8 from beyond the arc. However, the 20-year-old just kept shooting, showing that his confidence has not wavered. Harper has scored at least 12 points in five straight games and should keep it rolling tonight.
