Parker Messick, Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox ($9,300) — Messick has been very solid through 15 starts and 86.2 innings. He’s 7-3 with a 3.21 FIP. The K-BB% is 18.3%, while he’s allowed only eight home runs. The average exit velocity is 87.9 mph, while the barrel rate is only 5.8%. Messick has put up over 20 FPTS eight times this season, with only two games below 10 FPTS. Chicago has power with the fourth-best ISO, but it ranks 14th in wRC+ and third in strikeout rate.
Sean Burke, Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians ($7,000) — Burke has been solid as well, although the variability has been wider than Messick’s. Burke has five games with fewer than 10 FPTS, with a low of -0.2. On the flip side, he has gone over 20 FPTS five times, with two performances over 30 FPTS. Through 81 innings, the FIP is 3.97, while the K-BB% is 15.4%. Cleveland is 25th in ISO and 23rd in wRC+, currently playing without star slugger Jose Ramirez.
Matt Olson, Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres ($5,000) — Olson is slashing .271/.343/.539 with a 9.9% walk rate, 22.6% strikeout rate, and .268 ISO. He has 20 home runs, 53 runs, 51 RBIs, and two stolen bases in 332 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is 93.1 mph with a 13.9% barrel rate and 74.9 mph bat speed. Against right-handed pitching, he owns a 141 wRC+ and a .276 ISO. Twelve of his 20 home runs have been hit off a righty. German Marquez last pitched on May 1, and he’s likely to get the nod on Tuesday. The numbers were ugly back then. Through 29.2 innings, he posted a 6.65 FIP. Against lefties, the FIP was 8.79 with a 0% K-BB%. Six of the eight home runs allowed came off the bat of a lefty. But in four rehab outings, he posted a 1.76 ERA and a 0.98 FIP with 10 strikeouts while walking five in 15.1 innings. That changes the arithmetic slightly, but I’ll believe it when I see it against major leaguers.
Ryan Kreidler, Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Dodgers ($2,600) — Kreidler has accrued 89 plate appearances since his promotion in mid-May. He has four home runs, 16 runs, and 18 RBIs with a 11.2% walk rate, 19.1% strikeout rate, and .244 ISO. The slash is .295/.382/.538. The Statcast numbers don’t jump off the page, but his 74.6 mph bat speed certainly does, as he was in the 68 to 71 mph range while in Detroit. The righty has actually been more successful in same-side pitching matchups, posting a 163 wRC+ and .304 ISO. But he’s no slouch against lefties, owning a 143 wRC+ and a .156 ISO.
Michael Harris II, Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres ($4,300) — Harris has 14 home runs, 36 runs, 41 RBIs, and four stolen bases through 266 plate appearances. His .210 ISO is the highest it’s been since his rookie season. His .306 batting average is fueled by a .341 BABIP, though. The average exit velocity is 92.3 mph, the launch angle is 11.2 degrees, and the barrel rate is 15.1% — all career-highs. The bat speed is 74.9 mph. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 141 while the ISO is .224. As mentioned in the Olson section above, Marquez could be getting the nod, and he struggled mightily earlier in the season.
Drew Gilbert, San Francisco Giants vs. Athletics ($2,400) — Gilbert has appeared in 58 games and racked up 176 plate appearances this season. He has three home runs, 18 runs, and 15 RBIs with an 8% walk rate, 18.8% strikeout rate and .134 ISO. The average exit velocity is only 85.3 mph, barrel rate is only 2.4%, and the bat speed is only 69.9 mph. That said, Gilbert owns a 123 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, along with a .157 ISO. He’s put up at least 3 FPTS in seven straight games, with three performances in double-digits. Aaron Civale has a 6.41 FIP and a 3.8% K-BB% against lefties, with eight of his 12 home runs allowed coming off the bat of a southpaw.
