Bryan Armetta breaks down the biggest risers and fallers for Survivor 50 following Wednesday’s ninth episode, ‘I Deserve All of This’.
Fake idols, Jimmy Fallon twists, and another fan favorite sent packing. Wednesday’s episode of Survivor 50 saw Christian Hubicki’s time on the island come to a close. It’s a major shakeup, both on the beaches of Fiji and in this week’s power rankings.
Only ten players remain, with a shot at $1 million dollars hanging in the balance. Let’s break down the players gaining the most momentum, and losing the most steam, on Survivor 50.
Somehow, some way, Cirie continues to skate by on Survivor 50. Despite playing alongside experienced returnees, one of the show’s all-time greats hasn’t been clocked as a threat. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Cirie’s game is her secrecy. The edit has hammered home her close relationships with Ozzy and Rizo all season. However, we saw a strategic player such as Christian pitch her on voting out the former. In the words of Q, big mistake.
Granted, other cast aways might be waiting for the perfect time to strike against this old-school legend. After all, the 55-year-old has never been much of a challenge threat. Still, it seems a bit foolish to let such a dangerous player continue to dictate who goes home. The Christian-Devens-Emily alliance (more on that later) has already been burned by her. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone even pitches Cirie’s name going forward, let alone successfully blindsides her.
Speaking of Cirie, we’ve got to mention one of her top allies this week. It wasn’t an over the top episode for Rizo, but that isn’t a bad thing. We’ve seen the Season 49 alum make big moves already this season. A few quieter votes make sense to manage his threat level. Still, we got an interesting insight from the New York native before tribal council. Despite some murmurs of switching the votes to Emily, Rizo was adamant that Christian should get his torch snuffed. His hunch ended up holding more weight, with his preferred target getting sent home.
Big picture, few players are better positioned than Rizo. He has an idol. as does his friend Ozzy. He’s protected by two big names, potentially insulating himself from a blindside over the next few weeks. His opinion also matters, as seen during Wednesday’s Christian vote. Going forward, it’ll be interesting to see how this emerging threat positions himself for the end game. Can he fully trust Cirie, or will there come a time where a new ally is needed?
This might be a controversial placement, but Aubry has set herself up quite nicely. To be fair, you’d be forgiven for expressing some skepticism here. The four-time returnee has spent most of Survivor 50 on the bottom, failing to form strong bonds with anyone other than Tiffany. Despite being gifted an immunity idol by Christian, she ended up getting rid of it quickly post-merge. None of this, along with a so-so edit, points to potential winner.
With that being said, there’s always a benefit to flying under the radar. Once a popular name, nobody is even considering Aubry at the moment. Barring a colossal mistake, she should find herself safe for the next few votes. Forming a working relationship with Jonathan was also a savvy move. Can Aubry continue to successfully play the middle without being noticed? In what could become a battle between two alliances, it’s not a bad spot to be in. Right now, an extended run to Final Tribal Council is certainly on the table.
Rough, rough week for Mr. Devens. Last week’s hectic fake idol pull seems to have done far more harm than good. Everyone other than Emily and Christian seems to think it’s legit, making Rick a major threat. However, the downside is that he became target number one on a minority alliance of just three. Christian’s bad luck on the Jimmy Fallon journey only made a successful vote even more difficult this week for the trio.
To boot, it seems like Rick’s reputation as a hectic, idol-grabbing scrambler is coming back to haunt him. Aubry, someone he has a decent connection with, is now looking to Jonathan’s group for security. Emily’s propensity to blurt out information makes her a difficult player to pair with as well. Given the amount of big names that have gone home recently, Devens’ time in this game could be numbered. He’ll have to tread lightly over the next few weeks to avoid elimination.
If we’re talking Rick, we might as well bring up his new number one. On the bright side, Christian’s vote out could have been much worse. After pushing to keep her top ally around, Cirie and Tiffany seriously pitched flipping the vote onto Emily herself. Although that plan didn’t come to fruition, it shows that the respect level just isn’t there for this strategist. At this point, nobody other than Devens seems to value keeping Emily in this game.
Even if Emily manages to work her way out of next week’s vote, it’s difficult to get too excited. After all, we’re not too far off from the end of this season. At this point, reputations and resumes are being forged. The respect for Emily from her fellow players doesn’t seem to be there right now. It’ll take some major moves, or finding two even more unlikable players, to earn a FTC victory. That’s quite the long shot at the moment.
