Bryan Armetta offers up a preview, prediction and pick for Saturday’s MLB game between the Cleveland Guardians and Philadelphia Phillies.
Postseason contenders are set to clash this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. The Guardians (31-22) stand alone atop the AL Central. Cleveland is a sneaky contender in the wide-open Junior Circuit. Earning a win against one of the National League’s better clubs would be quite the statement. Despite a poor start, the Phillies (25-26) have been a different team under interim manager Don Mattingly. Philadelphia has gone 16-7 over its last 23 games. Who has the edge going into Saturday’s interleague matchup?
The Phillies are favorites (-188) over the Guardians, with the over/under set at seven runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Saturday’s interleague showdown between Cleveland and Philadelphia on DraftKings Sportsbook.
In this battle between heavyweights, Cleveland will send Slade Cecconi to the mound. It’s been a struggle for the right-hander this season; he’s on the hook for a 5.16 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 42 strikeouts (7.2 K/9) over ten starts. A look at the advanced metrics doesn’t paint a prettier picture either. The 26-year-old ranks inside the bottom 25th percentile of all qualified pitchers in xERA (4.99), xBA (.270), whiff % (20.5) and K % (18.2). With that being said, Cecconi has only allowed four earned runs during his last 16.2 innings of work (2.16 ERA).
After a miserable first few weeks, the Phillies are finally playing up to their potential on offense. In the month of May, they rank second in homers (29), fifth in slugging percentage (.409) and tenth in runs scored (91). During that stretch, Philadelphia has five different hitters with an OPS above .800: Bryce Harper (.944), Alec Bohm (.941), Kyle Schwarber (.929), Bryson Stott (.863) and Brandon Marsh (.815). With that being said, Cleveland ace Gavin Williams led his squad to a 1-0 shutout on Friday night. The Phillies have a .297 on-base percentage this season, fourth-worst in baseball.
Cecconi will likely need to be at his absolute best considering who else is on the mound. Zack Wheeler has wasted no time getting back up to speed this season. After missing most of April, the three-time All-Star has re-established himself as one of the sport’s premier starting pitchers. Through five outings, he’s accounted for a 1.99 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 30 strikeouts (8.5 K/9). In addition, the veteran has allowed more than two earned runs only once during his limited action.
Wheeler utilizes a mix of six different pitches. His three most-used selections, other than the fastball, are his sinker (19%), sweeper (15%) and splitter (13%). Against those offerings, Cleveland hitters have recorded a .228 batting average and .302 wOBA this season.
That’s not to say the Guardians are complete slouches at the plate. In fact, this group has shown some major improvement at the plate in 2026. They’ve scored the tenth-most runs (229), 11th-best on-base percentage (.323) and second-most steals (54) in the majors this season. Even more impressive, Cleveland hasn’t even gotten great production out of franchise cornerstone Jose Ramirez, although he’s begun to turn things around. It’s a balanced lineup, with eight different hitters notching a wRC+ above 100.
Cecconi has been prone to putting runners on base this season. However, that could be less of an issue against a Phillies club that lacks plate discipline. On the other side, Cleveland’s active hitters have a combined .217 batting average and .620 OPS over 46 at-bats against Wheeler. With the way Philadelphia’s ace is throwing, it’s difficult to envision a letdown at home today. Expect both starters to keep the scoring at a minimum on Saturday.
