Apple very cautious about iPhone Ultra sales, as Samsung wins major concession | Render shown of the anticipated new folding iPhone

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to launch this fall, and a notable leaker says that inside sources indicate the name won’t be ‘iPhone Fold,’ but rather ‘iPhone Ultra.’

Leaker says ‘iPhone Ultra’ is the expected foldable name, and it’s already being copied

It’s been a busy week for rumors about the iPhone Fold. Yesterday we got word of the device hitting a major production milestone, then today details of early snags already emerged.

Perhaps most notably, Sonny Dickson offered the first dummy model comparisons of iPhone Fold to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Now, another significant rumor has arrived—and it has to do with product branding.

Per a new Weibo post from leaker Digital Chat Station, the foldable iPhone is likely to be called ‘iPhone Ultra,’ not ‘iPhone Fold.’

Here’s his translated post:

Rumor has it that Apple’s wide-format foldable device will be named the “iPhone Ultra.” Domestic manufacturers are reportedly considering following suit, tentatively branding their new foldables as “Ultra” as well—aiming to go head-to-head with Apple across the board in terms of screen form factor, hardware specifications, and pricing.

Naming is often one of the last details to leak about a new product. So it’s unclear how, exactly, Chinese manufacturers have gotten wind of Apple’s branding plans.

That said, within the industry there’s always an advantage to be gained from following Apple’s lead. In some cases companies even preempt Apple’s moves based on rumors around what Apple is going to do. So it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple’s naming has already leaked.

9to5Mac’s Take

I’ve personally argued in the past that iPhone Ultra makes sense as the name for Apple’s foldable. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently hinted at the ‘Ultra’ name too.

More recently though, I’ve leaned toward another name such as iPhone Duo. The Ultra branding feels ill-fitting for an iPhone that will lack Face ID and have one less camera than Pro models.

But I’ll admit that Apple’s product names don’t always make the most sense. So if the company has settled on ‘iPhone Ultra’ for its foldable, I’m sure it will have a strong argument that the new model deserves that name.

What do you think the iPhone Fold’s name should be? Let us know in the comments.
