iPhone Ultra 2 already given go-ahead, iPhone Air 3 not, says leaker | Image shows a render of the first-gen iPhone Ultra

We may still be waiting for the launch of the iPhone Ultra, but a leaker with a decent track record claims that Apple has already made the decision to go ahead with a second-generation model.

The same source says that the company has not yet made a final decision on whether to produce a third-gen iPhone Air

iPhone Ultra 2 gets go-ahead

Until recently, it hadn’t even been clear when the first-gen iPhone Ultra might launch. There had been suggestions that it might be delayed into December or even early next year.

Those rumors have now faded away with all recent reports pointing to a launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September.

Leaker Digital Chat Station today suggests that Apple has already green-lighted a second-generation model, although they don’t provide any details on what new features might be offered. They do suggest that the display will be unchanged.

The iPhone Ultra2 second generation wide folding project has been confirmed, with a high probability of reusing this year’s screen.

No decision yet on iPhone Air 3

The same post says that the company has not yet made a decision on whether to proceed with an iPhone Air 3.

We are expecting to see an iPhone Air 2 with a second camera in the form of an ultrawide lens. DCS suggests that Apple wants to see how well this model sells before making a decision on a successor.

9to5Mac’s Take

These claims likely don’t mean too much, even if they are accurate.

Apple’s product development plans run several years in advance, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising to know that the company is already hard at work on an iPhone Ultra 2. This doesn’t, however, mean that the model will ever see the light of day. If its predecessor bombs, then the project can easily be cancelled.

Similarly, it’s almost certain that there is a team working on the development of the iPhone Air 3, even if the company hasn’t yet made a decision on whether to proceed with it.

One potential reason for the disparity in the reports may be that Apple sees a way to reduce the price of an Ultra 2 by a worthwhile amount, in which case it may be more confident in launching this even if the first-gen Ultra doesn’t prove popular.
