Anthropic cleared to release Claude Mythos 5 to over 100 ...
Marcus Mendes · 2026-06-27 · via 9to5Mac

Following an export control directive two weeks ago that forced Anthropic to disable access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for all customers, the company scored a partial victory in a deal with the US government earlier tonight. Here are the details.

Anthropic makes progress with the US government

As reported by Semafor, the US government has partially lifted the export control directive issued against Anthropic last week.

The exact reasons that led to the directive remain unclear, but most reports indicate that the government grew concerned after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent about a purported jailbreak that left Anthropic’s models vulnerable to misuse. There were also reports that the White House had grown concerned about China’s access to Claude Mythos.

Whatever prompted the restriction, Anthropic and the US government spent the past two weeks working toward a resolution. Those talks yielded their first result tonight, with the government partially lifting the restrictions and allowing Anthropic “to release it to more than 100 US institutions, including major companies and government agencies”, according to Semafor.

From the report:

“I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote to Anthropic’s chief compute officer Tom Brown Friday, citing “significant progress” in the intense, daily talks between the government and the company since the block went into effect.

Right now, there is no word on when (or whether) Anthropic customers should expect Claude Fable 5 to be made available as well. Semafor said Lutnick’s letter “is silent on Fable 5,” but the report notes that “people close to the talks said they are moving toward releasing Fable as well, though that timeline is unclear.”

Tonight’s news comes just hours after OpenAI’s limited release of its new GPT-5.6 models. As the company explained earlier today, the models are initially available only to a small group of trusted partners approved in coordination with the US government, with a broader rollout planned for the coming weeks.
