It’s been revealed that an athlete and pilot killed in a microlight plane crash was being filmed for the Vision Pro immersive video series Adventure at the time.

The report says that crew members had reported safety concerns to Apple ahead of the crash, citing factors such as limited training and unsafe working hours …

Fatal plane crash during Adventure filming

Adventure is the name given to one of Apple’s immersive video series’ on Vision Pro. The show description says that it “follows pioneering athletes as they take on awe-inspiring challenges.”

Bloomberg reports that the episode being filmed was of British paraplegic athlete and microlight pilot Claire Lomas flying over the desert in Jordan. The tragedy occurred in 2024, but the purpose of the flight has only now been reported.

Lomas was being actively recorded when the crash occurred, and a camera system was mounted on the plane itself, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing a sensitive matter. The reason Lomas was flying a plane in the Jordan desert hasn’t previously been reported.

The episode was due to have been released last year.

The piece says that crew members had reported safety concerns to Apple during the making of the Adventure series ahead of the fatal crash, and that Apple responded by sending in a safety consultant.

People involved with the collaboration say there were concerns related to production safety for both athletes and crew during the making of the Adventure series.

The issues included working longer hours than people on staff deemed safe, filming in harsh climates, and operating equipment in areas and conditions that the crew had limited training for

Staffers complained to their superiors at Apple about the issues, they said. In response, the company sent a health and safety representative to periodically work alongside the production staff, the people said. There’s no record of other major injuries tied to the series.

9to5Mac’s Take

We’ll need to wait for the coroner’s report to discover whether anything could have been done to prevent this tragedy. However, it’s worth noting that series’ such as this by definition feature high-risk activities.

General Aviation is far more dangerous than commercial aviation, and within GA microlight aircraft have an accident rate twice as high as that of conventional light aircraft, with those crashes also more likely to prove fatal.
