Rumors about the iPhone Ultra are readily available and offer a strong consensus on what’s coming in Apple’s foldable model. But as I’ve been weighing my own upgrade decision this year, there’s one big question that likely won’t be resolved until September: will the new form factor make the trade-offs of the Ultra worth it?
Now that iPhone Ultra is just a few months away, I’ve been weighing my upgrade decision this year.
And no matter how many specs, features, and other product details I learn, I’m still not fully convinced it’s the right model for me. The biggest unknown involves the form factor itself, and whether the Ultra’s trade-offs will be worth it.
It’s a question that’s prompted by leaks that show a very unique design coming with iPhone Ultra.
Its outer display will be significantly shorter and wider than we’re used to on the iPhone. And its inner display will feel more like an iPad.
iPhone Ultra will be the first ever major form factor change for the iPhone. And as such, it could run the risk of fixing something that’s not broken.
But it’s not just the unusual design: the iPhone Ultra will have feature compromises too.
Apple’s high-end model won’t have a Telephoto camera, nor Face ID. And with its titanium design and lack of vapor chamber, it may be prone to overheating in a way that Pro models no longer are.
With iPhone 18 Pro, you get the same great iPhone experience as always, but with improved performance, cameras, battery life, and more. Essentially, it’s the iPhone you know and love, but better.
With iPhone Ultra, it’s not at all the iPhone you know and love. It’s something unique. That’s exciting, but it also won’t be for everyone.
I’ll admit, I’ve never used a foldable smartphone. I know plenty of people love the form factor, so I’m inclined to think foldables have a bright future. But I also know how much the tried and true iPhone design is beloved by users—myself included.
Maybe the experience of using iPhone Ultra will make the product’s drawbacks inconsequential. But until Apple gives its official pitch, and we get the first hands-ons, I’m not yet sure which new iPhone will be right for me.
