Emoji selection on the Mac remains an area ripe for improvement with future versions of macOS. Until then, Mojito is a new and free solution that greatly improves the Mac emoji picker experience.
Working with emoji on the iPhone and iPad is easy since they’re part of a dedicated keyboard and can be easily summoned just by typing their description.
On the Mac? It’s been a different story since the Touch Bar was discontinued.
There’s the hard-to-remember Control + Command + Space keyboard shortcut, but did I mention that it can be hard to remember? Double pressing the Globe or fn key is better, but even that method feels slow and spotty.
That’s where Mojito enters the picture. It’s a lightweight utility that lives in the menu bar on your Mac. Totally free, no upgrades, and it works as advertised.
Similar to Slack and other apps, just type the emoji name between two colons and it appears. Hit return, and it inserts. It’s all keyboard-based with no cursor selection, at least for now. Plus there are a handful of settings for customizing how it works.
