iOS 27 brings exciting new features to Messages, Apple Notes, Wallet, and more. But FaceTime is getting one of the biggest upgrades thanks to a powerful new Dual Capture feature for iPhone 17 and newer.
Last fall, the iPhone 17 family launched with an exclusive new feature in the Camera app: Dual Capture. Dual Capture lets you use your iPhone’s Center Stage front camera simultaneously with the rear camera when recording video.
And with iOS 27, a similar capability is coming to FaceTime.
If you have an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17, you’ll be able to show your front and rear camera views in FaceTime at the same time.
Our 9to5Mac YouTube team and Overtime podcast hosts, Fernando Silva and Jeff Benjamin, tested this in the iOS 27 beta.
Here’s how it works.
On iPhone 17 and other compatible models, tapping the ‘Flip’ button on the camera viewfinder automatically turns on dual capture mode.
You can optionally disable the front camera with a second tap. But the default is to keep your front camera view still active when the rear camera is turned on.
As long as both participants are running iOS 27, dual capture will be available on the FaceTime call. Older iPhones won’t be able to tap into dual capture on their end, but they’ll still be able to see the dual capture stream from the other person on the call.
