Mangomouse, sometimes written as Mango Mouse, is a slang for monogamous people. Based on a misspelling in a conversation between two people on a dating app, it quickly became a sensation online, especially among polyamorous communities, which led to fanarts of a fictitious rodent in the shapes and colors of a mango.
The first mention of Mangomouse as a word appeared in a screenshot of a conversation between two people on an unknown dating app. While both asked questions about their type of search on the app as well as their sexual orientations, one of them added "Mangomouse" and then clarified by stating "[they] only date one person at a time" (shown below)
The earliest post of this screenshot comes from Facebook, from a page named Illiterate Britain[1] on April 13th 2023.
The screenshot made its way into compilations of hilarious dating app exchanges on various entertainment sites such as Cheezburger[2] and Buzzfeed[3].
On April 19th, the first Urban Dictionnary definition was submitted[4], describing Mango Mouse as a slang for people practising monogamy, used by people from the Polyamory communities.
In Mai 2024, the r/mangomouse subreddit was launched[5], curating dozens of posts discussing the term and sharing mostly AI-generated images of rodents mixed with mangos.
