Sutherland Shire Council investigated, and staff believe the colour was likely to have been caused by "a harmless dye" being used by a plumber working on a drainage problem nearby.
One resident sent photos of the "green ooze" to the Leader.

"Sutherland Shire Council is aware of a coloured substance detected in the water at Gunnamatta Bay," a spokeswoman said.
"Investigation by the council's environmental health team has revealed the substance is likely to be a harmless dye commonly used by plumbers and Sydney Water to detect leaks or trace pipe locations, as a maintenance worker of a nearby unit complex was found to be using a fluorescein dye to trace and resolve a drainage issue.

"The dye will naturally dissipate with stormwater flows and tidal movements."
The Environment Protection Authority has also been contacted for comment.
