A driver was trapped after a ute crashed early today following a police pursuit at Caringbah.

A police statement said, about 1am on Saturday, police attempted to stop a ute on the Kingsway, Caringbah, due to the manner of driving

"When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, police commenced a pursuit before the ute crashed and rolled onto its side a short time later," the statement said.

"The passenger of the ute - a 23-year-old man - was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution.

"The driver - a 24-year-old man - was trapped for some time until he was freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.

"He was treated by paramedics and taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition under police guard.

"Police have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.
