Voices of Cook is making another attempt to find a community independent candidate to take on Liberal MP Simon Kennedy.

"We're looking for someone who truly gets Cook - someone who lives in and understands our beautiful community and is committed to representing Cook based on community feedback and evidence-based policy," a statement by the group's steering committee said.

An Expression of Interest process has opened.

The group, which was formed in 2024 after Mr Kennedy replaced former prime minister Scott Morrison, was unable to unearth a candidate for the 2025 election.

A statement said the Expression of Interest process "aims to produce a Community Independent to run at the next Federal election (expected by May 2028).

"Voices of Cook has been listening to the community - through their survey and by being out and about at train stations and parks."

The statement said the group would be "excited to hear from people in the community, who would relish this opportunity to represent their community or think they know someone who could be the voice of Cook in Canberra."

The group "hopes to harness the growing trend amongst Australians to give their votes to community independents where a credible option is available".

"In the 2025 election, Independents and minor parties received more votes than the LNP (source: The Australia Institute)," the statement said.

"Voices of Cook is based on a model used by a growing movement of about 40 other 'Voices of' groups as part of the community independents movement and is a non-partisan group dedicated to engaging residents in the democratic process.

"Voices of Cook is not a political party, rather a community group, which will support a chosen candidate from the community to run as an independent."
