Now in her 28th year of service and her third term as president of the hospital volunteers, she has seen how a cup of coffee translates into life-saving medical technology.

But with a roster stretched to its limit, she is calling on the community to join their ranks. While the volunteer group boasts 84 members, the reality of a rotating roster means they are often left scrambling.

"With our age demographic, one of our volunteers was recently off having a hip replacement," Mrs McKerihan said. "We need too many to have enough."

The kiosk is a primary funding engine for the facility. Every cent of profit is funnelled back into the wards to purchase essential equipment.

"Last year we bought $350,000 of hospital X-ray equipment," Mrs McKerihan said. "When you see patients who have used this whiz-bang technology get better, staff are so grateful for what we do."

Despite the physical demands, which can include long shifts stacking shelves, Mrs McKerihan said the social connection is just as vital as the financial contribution. "Being behind the coffee machine a bit like being a bartender," she said. "There is great camaraderie; we build good relationships with staff, patients, and families."

The group is looking for people who can commit to a morning or afternoon shift one or two times a week.
