Sutherland Shire Council voted unanimously for the action at Tuesday night's meeting following a motion by Carol Provan, who has been seeking action on the problem for many years.
The move is subject to endorsement by the Sutherland Shire Local Transport Forum, which is expected.
No timeframe has yet been given for the trial, however nearby households will be advised of the approved parking changes before the trial commences
Warnings will be issued to owners once the parking controls are in place.
The council will also press the state government for changes to legislation.
A report by council staff said the parking of trailers on streets had become increasingly challenging for councils across NSW to manage effectively through enforcement alone.
"Most councils, including Sutherland Shire Council, have relied on enforcing legislation rather than implementing widespread parking controls; however, this approach has proven to be reactive and resource intensive," the report said.
The report said the legislation had changed over time and now allowed councils to 'opt in' to enforce a 28-day limit on boat trailers parking in the street.
"Sutherland Shire Council continues to apply a pragmatic, risk-based approach that allows residents to park their boat trailer directly outside (or nearby) their household.
Under this NSW Government legislation, Council may notify a vehicle owner that their vehicle is causing a safety risk or an obstruction or has been left 'unattended'.
"The term 'unattended' is defined within the legislation as meaning where the vehicle is not under the direct control or supervision of its owner or other responsible person.
"This statutory definition is broad and difficult to consistently apply in typical residential and industrial street contexts."
