Cronulla MP Mark Speakman has written to the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, asking the exhibition period - April 10 to May 11 - be extended by four weeks.
Under the plans, a new suburb named Bidhiinja Beach - after the Dharawal name for oyster - will be developed around Boat Harbour in stages over 20 years and, when completed, have 7300 residents.
"I have been contacted by constituents, in particular from Kurnell, who are concerned about the timeframe for making submissions on this significant proposal," Mr Speakman wrote.
"You will be aware that this is a transformational project in the Sutherland Shire with the development to include 4300 new homes.
"This proposal for this area has been in development for around three years and in various forms going back well over a decade.
"Plans for new homes are welcome but given the time taken to develop the proposal and its scale and complexity, I believe interested members of the community should in good faith be given an extended timeframe to review the exhibition documents and make submissions."
Mr Speakman has also emailed local residents, saying, "For young homebuyers and downsizers in particular, more housing is good news, but it must be matched by adequate infrastructure".
"I'm calling on Premier Chris Minns to make sure Captain Cook Drive is widened to four lanes before any new projects start on the Kurnell Peninsula (and not in the late 2030s as is currently planned) and more broadly to state what his government's plans are for infrastructure in the Cronulla area," the email said.
"We have not heard one significant infrastructure announcement or commencement in the Cronulla electorate in three years of the Minns Labor government, whether it's schools, hospitals, public transport, roads.
The planning proposal includes 4300 homes, commercial and retail space, tourism accommodation and community facilities, with building heights ranging from 3.5 metres to 44 metres (12 storeys).
