"Sutherland Shire LGA currently does not have any radiation oncology services available (either publicly or privately) with the closest facility located 20 to 30 minutes drive at Hurstville," the State Significant Development application said.
"This site would represent the first site in Sutherland Shire providing much needed accessibility to cancer care services."
Sutherland Hospital's website says its oncology day clinic provides a limited consultative service for radiation oncology, but all radiation treatment is carried out at St George Hospital or, alternatively, a private facility.
The proposed new $112 million, five-storey development would rise on an L-shaped site at 27 Flide Street and 396-402 Kingsway, near the intersection of Taren Point Road.

The site is within a precinct adjoining Sutherland Hospital that was zoned in the 2015 LEP for developments with medical facilities at ground level and apartments above.
The medical side has been slow to take off.
The new proposal includes a five levels below ground, four of which would be for parking.
Basement Level 5 would be a "reinforced concrete bunker to allow for state-of-the-art cancer treatment and scanning instruments".
The development was originally approved in 2019, but did not proceed.
An extra property has since been added to the amalgamation, leading to a new development application.
The revised design "is largely consistent with the bulk, scale form and layout of the approved development," the application stated.
