To commemorate International Nurses Day 2026, RRT volunteers from Engadine served 1500 meals to staff, part of a massive national effort to serve more than 12,000 meals at 35 hospitals across Australia.

Team leader Ken Chappell said the gesture was designed to offer more than just a meal, but a moment of genuine respite for those who rarely sit down.

"We are saying to nurses, we see the important job you do, working around the clock to care for people when they need it most, and we really appreciate it," Mr Chappell said. "It's all about putting that appreciation into action, encouraging nurses to take a well-earned break and enjoy a delicious meal with their colleagues.

"The theme... really emphasises just how important it is that we take care of those who give so much to take care of others."

The initiative aligns with this year's global theme, "Empowered Nurses Save Lives". With more than 74,000 nurses serving in the NSW Health system, the state government has recently moved to bolster the workforce through the abolition of wages caps and the implementation of safe staffing levels.

Health Minister Ryan Park said their impact is felt far beyond the bedside, reaching into research, virtual support, and education. "Their professionalism, clinical expertise, and compassion support people every day, in every part of NSW," Mr Park said.

As the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, the RRT has been providing global crisis and community support since 2013. For the nurses in Kogarah, the lunch was a tangible reminder of the community's backing. NSW Health's chief nurse Jacqui Cross, herself a veteran of the profession, said the day provides a vital window for reflection. "I know the depth and value of the contribution that you make, and I believe it's such a wonderful profession that genuinely makes a difference," Ms Cross said.

The celebrations also serve as a kick-off for the 2026 Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards. Members of the public who have experienced extraordinary care are encouraged to nominate their healthcare heroes for the Healing Heart Award on the NSW Health website before June 12.
