The first upgrade at the pool in 35 years will include retiling the 25-metre swimming pool and infants' pool, installation of new starting blocks, and adjusting the depth of both pools to improve safety for swimmers.
There will also be a full replacement of the facility's floor, a change room refurbishment, and the installation of solar panels with battery storage to reduce energy costs.
And local company, FitXP, well-known for delivering sports programs in schools, has been appointed to run and maintain the pool.
The Peakhurst West pool opened in the early 1960s following community fundraising and since that time tens of thousands have learnt to swim and trained at the pool.
The upgrade and appointment of FitXP as a long-term operator secures the pool's future for students at Peakhurst West and other local schools and learn-to-swim providers who run swimming programs from the pool, including the community swim clubs.
The pool will close from late May to November for the upgrade works to be completed.
Deputy Premier of NSW and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said the upgrades and renovations will transform the pool, modernise the facility, improve safety, and ensure this remains a valuable community asset for generations.
"The Peakhurst community has always valued this pool, and it's inexcusable that the Liberals refused to invest in these facilities when they had the opportunity," Ms Car said.
Georges River Councillor Elaina Anzellotti described the upgrade and appointment of a long-term operator as a real win for the Peakhurst community.
" It ensures this well-loved space is not only preserved, but improved, so it can continue to be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.
"This work will breathe new life into Peakhurst West pool, delivering safer, updated amenities that reflect the needs of local families," Cr Anzellotti said.
State Member for Oatley, Mark Coure said, "This is a major victory for our local community. When Labor moved to close Peakhurst West Swimming Pool, local residents stood up, spoke out and refused to give up, and together, we saved it.
"Peakhurst West Swimming Pool has now been completely revitalised through a $1.5 million upgrade, with improved facilities that will serve local families, school students and swimming groups for many years to come."
"For me, this is deeply personal. I learned to swim here, and so did my son. To see this pool reopened and thriving once again is a proud moment for our whole community and proof that when people come together, they can achieve great things."
"I want to thank every resident, community advocate, swim club and local supporter who stood shoulder to shoulder throughout this campaign. This result belongs to the community," he said.
