A spokeswoman for Sutherland Shire Council said the recently planted Araucaria heterophylla (Norfolk Island Pine) was part of a broader tree planting program by the council across Cronulla, which had delivered more than 120 new trees to the area.
"Sourced from Andreasens Green Nursery, the Norfolk Island Pine was selected for this location as it is well suited to open coastal parkland environments and complements the existing Norfolk Island Pines already established within Cronulla Park," the spokeswoman said.
"Several of the mature Norfolk Island Pines in Cronulla Park are historically significant, appearing in aerial imagery from the 1930s and 1943.
"Based on these records, some of the larger trees in the park are estimated to be close to 100 years old."
Canary Island Date Palms, some of which are also believed to be 100 years old, are another feature of Cronulla Park.
The council has removed several of them over the last 10 years after they were affected by a fungal disease known as Fusarium wilt.
The council spokeswoman said, at this time, "no issues requiring intervention have been identified" in relation to the remaining Canary Palms.
"Council will continue to monitor tree health as part of standard maintenance activities," she said.
