Dr Gapps, a recipient of NSW Premier's History Award in 2011, won the inaugural Les Carlyon Award for the writing of military history in 2019 for his ground-breaking The Sydney Wars - Conflict in the early colony 1788-1817.

This volume was followed in 2021 with Gudyarra: The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance, the Bathurst War 1822-1824 and by Uprising: War in the Colony of NSW 1838-1844 in 2025.

Dr Gapps also co-edited and contributed to The Australian Wars, based on the award-winning documentary series by Rachel Perkins.

He will discuss his latest works, Uprising and The Australian Wars on may 16 and consider what these mean for truth-telling and the appropriate commemoration and recognition of Australia's Frontier Wars.

All are welcome to attend this meeting to be held at 1.30 on Saturday 16 May 2026.

Sutherland Shire Historical Society meets at Stapleton Centre, 3A Stapleton Avenue Sutherland - just a short walk from Sutherland station.

Reserve a place at this event by registering at shirehistory@gmail.com

A selection of Dr Gapps' books will be on sale.
