Councillor Nancy Liu the council risks being left behind if it does not act now.

She submitted a notice of motion to the April council meeting calling for the council to support a strategy for the accelerated development of a Public EV Charging Infrastructure.

This would identify priority locations for public EV charging stations, including high-density residential areas, commercial centres, public car parks, and key community facilities.

The council will prepare a staged rollout plan with strategic planning and site assessment target: within six months of the strategy finalisation.

The council will also identify public-private partnerships and external funding opportunities.

In 2022, Georges River Council adopted Cr Liu's notice of motion of Electric Vehicle Strategy, setting a clear direction for supporting EV uptake across the local government area.

In 2024, the council supported the rollout of EV charging infrastructure in key public locations.

"What has changed is the urgency," Cr Liu said.

"Global energy markets have become increasingly volatile, shaped by geopolitical tensions and supply uncertainties. Rising fuel prices are now a real and immediate concern for local households," she said.

"For many residents, transport is not optional. It is essential for work, family, and daily life. While electric vehicles are often discussed as part of the solution, the reality is that many people cannot yet make that transition.

"Not because they are unwilling, but because the infrastructure is not accessible, available, or practical, particularly for those without private charging options.

"This is where the council has a role to play.

"The council has already set the strategic direction. The next step is implementation. That means identifying priority locations, preparing for partnerships, and ensuring our planning settings support EV-ready development.

"Importantly, this approach positions the council to take advantage of external funding opportunities and private sector investment, rather than reacting after opportunities have passed.

"This is not about promoting one type of vehicle over another. It is about making sure residents have practical and viable options as conditions evolve.

"The state government has announced significant investment in EV infrastructure. This creates a real opportunity. Our responsibility as a council is to be ready, ready to align, ready to act, and ready to secure those resources for our community," she said.

Cr Liu's motion was unanimously supported by the council.
