The owners of Amy’s Kitchen have listed their island-inspired Stinson Beach house for $16 million, more than $10 million above what they paid in 2011.
Andrew and Rachel Berliner, who started the organic food company in 1987 and named it after their daughter, bought 172 Seadrift Road for $5.7 million, according to public records. The five-bedroom, three-bath beachfront oasis sits on three-quarters of an acre. At 1,900 square feet, it’s priced at a whopping $8,400 per square foot.
Beachfront homes on the street command premium prices; listing agent Butch Haze of Compass sold one a few doors down at 134 Seadrift for $17.5 million in 2023. That home is larger and more luxurious but also represents a time long before the insanity of the AI pre-IPO market. A 2014 build across the lagoon on Dipsea, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, is more telling of current conditions; it sold this month for just over $10 million — about $3 million above the asking price.
The Berliners’ home, built in 1983, has an unusual layout; each bedroom has exterior doors that open to the garden or patio. Haze likened the soaring ceilings to those of a joglo, a traditional Indonesian wooden pavilion with a peaked roof.
“I’ve sold a lot of homes over the years, but this is one of the few where I found myself checking flight prices to Bali afterward,” said Haze, who is colisting with Sarah Butler of Oceanic Realty.
It is one of the few Stinson homes to have a pool, he added. It is heated, and the Berliners said they enjoy running from a quick dip in the ocean to a much warmer soak in the pool. Overall, they appreciate the property’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle, especially the sliding glass doors on both sides of the open-concept living and dining area, which is centered around a fireplace with a towering chimney.
The Berliners said they fell in love with the home the moment they saw the “tropical paradise” of the lush garden against the backdrop of Mount Tamalpais.
“In the kitchen, you can see the mountains and the ocean at the same time that you are cooking or eating,” the couple said in a statement.
Amy’s Kitchen has annual retail sales of about $1 billion, according to a Fortune profile of the couple, who gave an interview from the Petaluma ranch home (opens in new tab) they lived in when they started what became a frozen food empire. That house is still their primary residence and will continue to be their California base as they seek to replicate the Stinson property’s island vibes with the real thing in Hawaii, where their daughter has moved with her husband and son.
“We need to replace this magical house with something over there,” they said.
