San Francisco has never been shy about loving itself, but this summer the city is broadcasting that affection into the stratosphere.
Starting Sunday, a public art installation called “7X7" will fire 49 beams of light above Civic Center Plaza through July 4 — one beam for each square mile of the city, in case anyone forgot exactly how big San Francisco is.
Conceived and produced by the nonprofit Illuminate, the installation will be visible across the city and the Bay Area, changing colors throughout its run. It will glow rainbow during Pride weekend and take on the colors of the American flag for the nation’s 250th birthday on July 4.
The artwork debuts during what Mayor Daniel Lurie’s office called a historic stretch for the city, as San Francisco welcomes visitors for Pride, the FIFA World Cup, and Fourth of July fireworks.
“As our city welcomes people from around the world … we are showing the creativity, energy, and spirit that make San Francisco the greatest city in the world,” Lurie said.
Illuminate founder and chief visionary officer Ben Davis said the timing made the moment especially significant.
“With the summer solstice, Pride, six World Cup matches, San Francisco’s 250th and America’s 250th all in the span of two weeks, it’s an amazing stretch here in the city,” Davis said. “The world will be looking at San Francisco, and ‘7X7' is our chance to inspire millions.”
Illuminate is the organization behind the Bay Lights on the Bay Bridge and the WelcomeSF rainbow laser display along Market Street. During Pride weekend, “7X7" will share the sky with “WelcomeSF,” a 4.1-mile installation billed as the world’s largest Pride flag.
“One of the things that makes San Francisco such a great place to live is that you can find moments of joy, beauty, and connection in our public spaces,” San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department General Manager Sarah Madland said. “Projects like ‘7X7' bring people together, activate our civic spaces, and create experiences that are free and accessible to everyone.”
Not content to merely illuminate the sky, the city announced Monday it will set off fireworks directly from the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge on July 4 — only the third time it has ever done so.
The free display begins around 9:30 p.m. and is the city’s only official fireworks show this year. Given that few things say summer in San Francisco like fog and a fleece-lined windbreaker, officials urged spectators to take transit and dress in layers. The city also recommended seeking out vantage points (opens in new tab) at Crissy Field, Marina Green, and other areas near Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf.
