Last year, San Francisco turned violet, and I missed it.
Not usually one for FOMO, I began to realize something big was happening, something electric, something called the Valkyries. But having never cared about basketball, I did nothing. I watched from the outside as the season wore on, and I began to long to join in.
It was obvious, even from my perch on the sidelines, that Valkyries fans were having the most fun in San Francisco. Chase Center on game night was the hottest club in the city. My lesbian friends were bringing dates to games and meeting potential dates there. Rikki’s, the Castro’s women’s sports bar, was hitting capacity on game nights 45 minutes before tip-off. A car in my neighborhood had a license plate that read “Valkslove.” My young sons were coming home from school talking about Ballhalla.
And then, like an idiot, I let the season end without going to a single game.
I am determined not to let that happen this year. And I know I’m not alone. There are plenty of us ready to jump on the Valkyries bandwagon before the season kicks off in a couple weeks.
So this week’s episode of “PST” is devoted to all things Valkyries: which players to watch, what the first season meant to this city, why it’s a turning point for women’s sports, and why now is the moment to stop watching from the sidelines — and finally become a fan.
