GetIstio - CLI, training, and community
Peter Jausovec · 2021-02-11 · via Learn Cloud Native

GetIstio was released this week. It is an open source project, and you can use it to install, operate, and upgrade Istio installation on your cluster.

It uses a vetted, upstream distribution of Istio - a hardened image of Istio with continued support that is simpler to install, manage, and upgrade.

The first version integrates with GCP and AWS certificate managers. So if you ever wanted your workloads to use certificates signed by your private certificate authority, you can do it with GetIstio with a single command.

If you check the certs on your workload, you'll see your own certificate useD:

Certificate:
    Data:
        Version: 3 (0x2)
        Serial Number:
            55:7f:b3:00:f8:b2:24:50:dc:51:7c:e5:85:5a:14:7a:65:28:26:38
        Signature Algorithm: sha256WithRSAEncryption

You can check out the articles here explaining how to integrate it with GCP and AWS.

Free Istio Fundamentals Course

In addition to the GetIstio CLI, the launch also includes a free, online course on Istio Fundamentals. The course has eight modules that take you from installing Istio, managing traffic, troubleshooting, and advanced features, such as connecting virtual machines' workloads to your Istio Service mesh.

The third part of the launch was the community. The inaugural community meetup is coming up next week, February 18th.

Zack Butcher will introduce the GetIstio project, and Christoph Pakulski will talk about GetEnvoy. Additionally, there will also be a demo of new features in Istio 1.9.

No need to register ahead. You can join through Zoom on February 18th at 9 AM via this link.
