Great Tech: Intel 2500k CPU · Danb Blog

When building my first custom-built PC, I chose the Intel 2500k as my CPU, which was from the “Sandy Bridge” range.

This was a 4-core (4-thread) CPU with a default frequency range of 3.3 to 3.9GHz. The great thing though with this CPU is that it was a great overclocker. You could quite easily achieve an overclock to about 4.5GHz, making it a brilliant value quad-core beast for the time.

A big factor that made the 2500k (and other Sandy Bridge CPUs) great was its timing. This second generation of the Intel Core range was a great leap upon the first gen, and then the following generations reflected Intel’s market-leading complacency with little generational jumps from new releases. This meant the 2500k kept up, and remained a useful CPU, for a long time. Many were used for well over a decade. Personally, I updated from it to a Ryzen 2600 in early 2019, marking 8 years of good use. I’ve kept my 2500k build around though, as it can come in useful as a test bench, especially when I need to directly test SATA devices. Here’s my test bench rig:

As an aside, I love the giant blue Phanteks cooler on this. I wish I could have migrated this to my newer PCs but I never managed to pick up an AM4 bracket for it.
