Accessibility is an ongoing process at CloudCannon, and something of a moving target — particularly since we’re always adding to features and improvements. And while we haven’t yet reached a perfect solution, we’re building CloudCannon for accessibility, and making sure our digital space is inclusive for individuals of all abilities.
At minimum, our aim is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level, which provide a blueprint for creating accessible web content.
Let's take a closer look at some of the notable accessibility improvements that have already made a tangible difference to CloudCannon users:
To enhance screen reader compatibility, we’re working to ensure that all elements of CloudCannon are labeled correctly and semantically structured, and that all notifications are announced to screen readers as they appear. We provide descriptive alt text for images, using correct heading tags for text content, and ensure that interactive elements are accessible via keyboard navigation. Additionally, we test CloudCannon with commonly used screen reader software to identify and address any compatibility issues.
We’ve improved keyboard navigation within CloudCannon and its menus by implementing common keyboard shortcuts and focus management. We’ve ensured that all interactive elements are accessible via keyboard tabbing and provide visible focus indicators to aid navigation. Additionally, we try to avoid relying solely on mouse-based interactions, ensuring that keyboard users can perform all essential tasks within CloudCannon.
To improve color contrast, our designers and engineers have selected colors with sufficient contrast ratios, and we try to avoid relying solely on color to convey information. We also use WCAG color contrast checkers to help identify and address any accessibility issues related to color.
Responsive design principles ensure that CloudCannon is accessible across different devices and screen sizes. This involves using flexible layout techniques, such as fluid grids and media queries, to adapt layout and content dynamically based on the user's device. Additionally, we prioritize content accessibility by ensuring that all essential information is accessible and readable regardless of the device or screen orientation.
While the majority of the content in CloudCannon and on our website is either written or represented with images, we’re also conscious of the need for captions and transcripts in multimedia content for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. All new videos created for CloudCannon will either provide options for users to enable captions or transcripts for audio and video content, or will have captions ‘burned in’ to the video.
By incorporating these accessibility improvements into CloudCannon’s design and development processes, we’re trying as hard as we can to ensure that CloudCannon is accessible to the broadest possible range of users, including those with disabilities. Regular testing and user feedback will help identify and address future accessibility issues, ensuring that the CMS remains inclusive and user-friendly for all.
