CANIS MYTHOLOGICA is a contemporary character design project that reimagines six legendary canine entities from ancient civilizations, folklore, and cosmic myths. Throughout human history, canines have
never been just pets; they are the psychopomps guiding our dead, the guardians blocking the gates of hell,
and the cosmic beasts devouring the moon. This visual exploration breathes new life into these ancient entities, merging dark mythic symbolism with sharp, modern illustration aesthetics.

Anubis is the dog-headed god of the underworld, whose duty is to guide human souls through the ceremony of the weighing
of the heart in the afterlife. His iconic visual features are dominated by deep black, which in Ancient Egyptian tradition did not symbolize death, but rather the fertility of the Nile River’s soil and rebirth.
Cù-Sìth is a giant fairy dog the size of a calf that acts as a silent harbinger of death across the misty Scottish highlands.
This character has a highly unusual and mystical visual aesthetic, as it is covered in dark green fur and has a long tail
that naturally curls into a braid.
Xolotl is the god of fire and transformation, appearing in the form of a human with a dog’s head or a skeleton. His duty is to guide the sun through the darkness of the underworld each night so that it may rise again safely. The story of this god is the origin of the name of the sacred hairless dog breed native to Mexico, the Xoloitzcuintli,
which local people believe wards off evil spirits.
Tiangou is known as the cosmic “Sky Dog” that loves to devour celestial bodies, triggering lunar and solar eclipses in ancient Chinese belief. This myth gave rise to a unique tradition in which people on Earth would loudly strike gongs and
set off firecrackers to scare Tiangou into spitting out the moon or sun it had swallowed.
An Inugami is a vengeful dog spirit (Shikigami) born from a cruel black magic ritual fueled by extreme anger; it is typically controlled by a sorcerer to bring wealth or harm enemies. Visually, this supernatural creature is often depicted as a severed dog’s head floating in the air, or as an anthropomorphic figure wearing traditional Japanese clothing.
Cerberus is a legendary guardian in the form of a giant, three-headed dog who guards the gates of Hades’ underworld to prevent the souls of the dead from escaping into the human world. In addition to his three ferocious heads, this terrifying creature is also depicted as having a venomous serpent’s tail and a mane made of hissing live snakes.
