Some Random Bits
ABSTRACT: The following is the script of an English video that I have posted on my YouTube channel.
Hi, everyone, my name is Changhai, and this is the first English video, or perhaps I should say an audio to be more precise, that I have made for my YouTube channel. The reason for such a video? Pretty much none, considering most of my subscribers are not English-speaking, at least not natively, and therefore this video will predictably receive much less interest. But I have made a video in my hometown dialect, which surely is even less known to my subscribers, so while there is not much reason to make an English video, there is also not much reason not to make one. After all, English is the only other language I may dare to claim that I know it reasonably well, and there might be topics for which English is a better choice of language.
Topics of this video? Also pretty much none, which is similar to what I did in the video in my hometown dialect: just some random bits.
Back to English, I dare to claim that I know it reasonably well not because of any talent in language learning, which I have none, but as a mere consequence of a simple fact: I have lived in an English-speaking country, the US, for a large portion of my life, in fact for more than half of my life. If it was not for the sake that I have far passed the best age for a normal person to learn a new language, English would be on par with my primary language. But of course it is not, and it will never be.
I sometimes feel that knowing a language that is as widely used across different countries as English is, is something that can be both proud of and not proud of. It is something that can be proud of, because you may travel to pretty much everywhere and it won't be too difficult to find someone to communicate with when necessary, because almost everyone everywhere knows at least a little bit of English. But it is also because of that, that almost everyone can tell that you have an accent.
As a comparison, if what you know is a less widely used language, for instance Japanese, it would sound far more magical, as if you have a secret tool that most people don't have. I have relatives that speak Japanese, that's how I felt when I heard them speaking Japanese. They surely also have an accent, but not to my ears, it's no more detectable than ultrasound or infrasound to my ears, and that is what feels magical to me. I know this is a weird and superficial feeling about languages, and I won't trade my English for any other language, however magical it might feel. But this video is about random bits, not even random thoughts, so please don't be too serious.
Another bit is about the US, the country I have spent more than half of my life in. It is a country that was generally healthy and was in good standing in many aspects when I first came. One characteristic of the healthiness of this country is that I did not, and need not, care about politics. When a country is in good health, you don't feel much in your daily life, just like a healthy person does not feel much about his or her body when doing ordinary things, no itch, no pain, no stress, nothing. And that was the good old days.
Not any more. Though I don't want to talk too much about politics in this video, and on this channel, I would like to add one more bit to the "random bits". That is: the strategy, or perhaps the lack of strategy of the current administration, or, as some have begun to call it, and rightly so, the current regime, is very ironic. It treats enemies, rivals, and allies in pretty much the same way, and thanks to that, hard or harder feelings towards the US were developed in pretty much all countries, very diverse, very equitable, very inclusive. In a word, very DEI. And that is truly ironic.
Well, that's enough random bits for this video, which, as I said before, is the first of its kind. I'm not sure whether I will make more in the future, but let me pause here, at least for now.
The last (and least) thing to mention is: the cover photo is a cartoonized version of a real photo of myself, it is somewhat funnier, weirder, but perhaps a little younger than I actually look. :-)
