A new domain transfer process is among the changes.

Nominet, the organization that oversees the United Kingdom’s .uk namespace, is making what it calls “the biggest changes to the operation of the .UK registry in Nominet’s 30 years of management.”

Last week, it set February 9, 2027, as the implementation date for its “.UK Standardization” project.

The biggest change for registrants will be a move from a push system to a pull system for inter-registrar transfers.

Most top level domain names use a pull system, where the process begins at the winning domain registrar. .Uk will move to this process next year.

Registrars will have the option to tack on an extra year at the time of transfer (for a fee, of course) or to accept transfers without adding time.

There are also changes to the domain deletion cycle. For registrars, all domains currently go to auto-delete during the expiration cycle, unlike the auto-renew practice of most top level domains. Registrars will now have a choice between auto-delete and auto-renew.
