Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept. Organizations are already benefiting from AI tools to improve productivity. But as AI capabilities expand, so do the questions. How secure is it? Where should it run? And how do organizations turn promise into practical impact without introducing new risk?

In a recent episode of the Stratix Podcast, host Alex Kalish, Chief Strategy and Solutions Officer at Stratix, sat down with Mike Burr, Senior Security Advocate for Android Enterprise at Google, to unpack one of the most important topics enterprise leaders face today: AI at the Edge—bringing AI directly onto mobile and frontline devices.

What followed was a practical conversation focused on what actually works, what organizations get wrong, and how to deploy AI securely and responsibly at scale.

What “AI at the Edge” Really Means

The term “Edge” gets thrown around frequently, often without clarity. In the enterprise mobile context, AI at the Edge simply means AI capabilities running directly on the device—not exclusively in the cloud.

That distinction matters.

For enterprise teams managing fleets of mobile and frontline devices, AI at the Edge includes capabilities like:

  • Voice-to-text and language translation
  • Active listening for data capture
  • On-device image processing
  • Smart summaries and contextual assistance
  • Built-in security features like phishing and scam detection

Running these workloads locally reduces dependence on constant connectivity, minimizes latency, and—critically—keeps sensitive data closer to where it’s created.

Why Enterprises Are Moving AI Closer to the Device

AI at the edge isn’t replacing the cloud. Instead, organizations are becoming more intentional about where intelligence belongs.

Modern mobile devices are now powerful enough to support on-device AI models, enabling faster decision-making and improved privacy. As Mike Burr explained, when AI runs locally:

  • Latency drops – insights happen in real time
  • Privacy improves – data doesn’t automatically leave the device
  • User experience improves – especially for frontline workers

Cloud-based AI still plays an important role for larger models and advanced processing, but AI at the Edge allows enterprises to balance performance, cost, and security more effectively.

The key takeaway: this isn’t an either/or decision. It’s about putting intelligence where decisions need to happen.

Security: The Question That Slows AI Adoption

Security concerns are often the biggest barrier to enterprise AI adoption—and understandably so. Leaders worry about data leakage, expanded attack surfaces, and loss of control.

The good news? When deployed properly, AI at the Edge can actually strengthen enterprise security.

On Android Enterprise devices, security starts with a hardware-backed root of trust. Each device verifies itself cryptographically from bootup, ensuring it hasn’t been compromised. AI then layers on top of this foundation.

Built-in protections include:

  • On-device phishing and scam detection
  • Secure AI frameworks that prevent data misuse
  • Policy-driven controls for admins to enable or restrict AI use

When AI is configured correctly—especially within managed work profiles—the data stays protected, isolated, and under enterprise control.

The Cost Conversation: Where AI Delivers ROI

Another common concern is cost. Enterprise leaders often ask whether AI investments pay off quickly enough to justify adoption.

The areas seeing the fastest return are straightforward:

  • Productivity gains for knowledge workers
  • Time savings through automation and summarization
  • Improved accuracy in documentation and data entry
  • Better frontline experiences in retail, logistics, and healthcare

In healthcare, for example, AI-powered voice-to-text reduces administrative burden for clinicians. In retail and logistics, AI supports inventory analysis, ordering, and fraud detection directly on devices employees already use.

The result isn’t workforce replacement—it’s workforce enablement.

Where Enterprises Get AI Deployment Wrong

One of the more candid parts of the conversation focused on mistakes organizations make when deploying AI:

  • Leaving AI enabled where it isn’t needed, increasing risk
  • Locking AI down entirely out of fear, limiting productivity
  • Failing to monitor new features or policy changes over time

Single-purpose devices, for example, may not need user-facing AI capabilities at all. At the same time, knowledge workers benefit significantly from AI-assisted tools.

Effective AI deployment requires intentional policy decisions, not blanket enablement or restriction.

AI Maturity: Still in Its Infancy

Despite the rapid pace of innovation, enterprise AI maturity remains early. Models are improving, features are evolving, and security frameworks continue to mature.

Mike described today’s landscape as “infancy”—not because AI lacks capability, but because most organizations are still learning how to operationalize it effectively.

Those who invest the time to understand AI, deploy it thoughtfully, and govern it responsibly will gain a long-term advantage. Those who ignore it risk falling behind as competitors learn to do more with fewer resources.
