Students will have had to successfully complete the PgCert and PgDip Units 1-6 to be able to enrol to MSt level. Students 'matriculate' (formally join the roll of the University) in the final year of the Programme and will need to apply for membership of a Cambridge College during their PGDip year if they intend to pursue the MSt. The College Fee is included in the fee for the course.

The dates and fees shown on this page apply to Cohort 1, who started in September 2024. Cohort 2's dates will be similar (not identical), with a small increase applied to the fees.

Residential Teaching

MSt students will be required to attend in Cambridge for two, two-day activities: presentation of their research project plans at the start of the year and presentation of their research findings towards the end of the year.

Research Dissertation

The final MSt year will require submission of a research dissertation of between 10,000 and 12,000 words in length including footnotes but excluding appendices and bibliography. The research project must address a topic in the space of scientific, medical, social or business innovation under the general theme of healthcare. The dissertation should be written with a focus towards the innovative aspects of the project underpinned with a strong understanding of the technologies or policies. The dissertation may include primary or secondary data or comprise a systematic review (with or without a meta analysis). This may be quantitative or qualitative in nature.

Applying

Prospective MSt students must be current (or deferred) students on the PGDip course and must have passed the PGCert year. New students who are not already on the programme cannot enter directly into the MSt year and any such applications will be rejected and they will lose their application fee.

Please note that there is a reimbursable £85 application fee for the MSt year only. The fee can be waived in some cases: https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/how/application-fee-waiver. Students who apply for 2026 entry, and who need to pay the fee, will be reimbursed via the Engineering Department when they start their MSt year.
